Double oil pan washer help?

Just changed the oil on my 4runner. There seemed to be an extra washer that was stuck to the pan. I'm not sure if this was the original washer or if it was part of the pan. I tried picking it off with my hand and it wouldn't budge and didn't want to use a tool on it in case it's supposed to be there. I added a new washer on top of it, and then the bolt. Did I **** up?

I started the car for 5 seconds, no leaks.

Should only be one washer between the plug and the pan. Next time you change the oil, take a 1" putty knife or large screw driver and gently tap at the washer stuck to the pan....it should come right off.

Thanks. I started the car and there's no leaking. Do you think it's alright to drive for another 5k? Or should I just err on the side of caution and remove it.

You'll be fine with the 2 washers till next oil change....same thing happened to me before. Kudos to you for catching it....I'll bet there are more than a few 4runners out there with double oil pan gaskets!

I noticed the same thing after screwing drain plug back in. Removed it to examine. After concluding it just didn’t look right, took a thin bladed standard screwdriver and attempted to gently pry. It came right off. When I had attempted to do the same with just my fingers it wouldn’t budge. I’d just periodically keep an eye on it till next oil change. Doubt it’s gonna back out as far in as it is, no biggie if it’s not weeping either.

They can stick pretty tightly. Also, the pan is under no pressure. If you torqued correctly, you should have no problem.

If you have a shop vac you can use it to pull a vacuum on your oil pan and remove the plug with no spillage.

these oil pan washers stick to the pan .. IMO aluminum washer NOT brass.
most pan plugs now have a built in rubber seal into the pan plug..
toyota did use this washer so you have to by these washers every time.
my 2016 runner still has the same factory washer on it.. no problem..
not leaking then only use one washer.

I used this shop vac technique to remove my oil drain plug, clean off the old stuck-on gasket with a thin putty knife, wipe everything off clean, and install a ValvoMax drain valve. It really works.

You will need a helper of course to hold the vacuum hose in place, and it makes a scary gurgling noise, but not a drop is spilled. Just be sure when you’re peeling and scrapping off the stuck-on gasket that you don’t break off a chunk of it and it gets sucked up into the oil pan.

PS: Have lots of rags or paper towels handy and an oil drain pan under it in case your helper slips with the vacuum hose!

By the way, that photo looks like there are THREE gaskets under that bolt. I’d be a little concerned about how many threads are engaged in the oil pan.

Yeah my OEM factory washer is still on there then too I guess LoL. I figured the blue rubber was part of the pan seal although I too had never seen that before. Tried prying it off but ever since I've been using another OEM washer of course against it, no problems and I've done probably 4-5 oil changes like that. hwell:

EASY MISTAKE. I have to chip mine off with a flathead screw driver at every oil change.

Not welded on. It will pop off, mostly if not fully intact.

I had the same issue sort of.

My pan where the bolt goes is raised. I scratched like hell with a plastic scraper and could not get it off. I can't tel if its a washer or the pan is just raised over there. It looks like its painted over too because the whole thing is black.

I can usually tell by feeling the hole with my finger. Stick your phone under there and snap a pic to be sure. I take a long handled flathead and rest it against the washer and hit it with a fist. Takes some force to chip it off every time.

I try again next oil change its not leaking but that thing was stuck.

Never had a washer not be able to come off.
