The problem health officials had was the extreme shortage of personal protective gear. They understandably wanted to reserve them for the medical professionals who were at most risk of contracting the disease, and spreading it if they caught it.

For a long time (and maybe still) N95 masks on amazon were reserved for medical personnel. The most good for the most people.

It was the governors who make masks mandatory, not medical professionals. And not all governors did make masks mandatory and their states suffered.
I don't think a single state enforces the mandatory mask rules and it was only recently when the pandemic got to the extreme situation it is in now that most people here started wearing masks.

In El Paso the pandemic was so bad they were shipping patients to Austin

Masks work against inhaling or expelling particles.
Filtration works. Your 4Runner has a cabin filter. And an engine air filter.

How brilliant is it to have this attitude: “I don’t care what those damn automotive bureaucratic “experts” say, I don’t trust them. I don’t need an engine air filter if I’m only running my car on a clean modern highway. I’ve been driving it that way for months with no problem. The engine breathes free! I feel more horsepower, I get better acceleration and better gas mileage. And it sounds better!

For the mask fans, how did you decide which version of "science" to attach your faith?

For example, which version of the CDC: masks don't work in Mar-2020 in the original Time article, or masks work in Apr-2020 when Time updated the article: Why People Aren'''t Listening to Experts About Face Masks | Time

Looks like "science" decided to magically change its position, as if by convenience.

The engine air filter analogy is interesting. The filter is great at blocking solid particles like dust and pollen but is horrible at blocking humidity. Some water vapor may condense on the filter element as air passes through, but most of it's going straight through.

Cloth face masks work the same way, but have less surface area than engine air filters. Wear a mask on a cold day when you can see your breath - to no one's surprise - you're going to see your breath. The mask is horrible at blocking your hot, humid breath.

It blocks just enough hot vapor to create a biological pitri dish against your mouth and nose, but most of the coronavirus in your breath is carried straight through with the majority of your hot, humid exhaust.

How is this common sense not the case?

Then why didn't they say something like cover you noses and mouth with bandanas, please leave masks to medical professionals unless we get enough supplies? Why lie saying that masks were not helping and put everybody at risk for a few months? How can we believe them now?

One of the interesting things about science is that theories change as more evidence is discovered through testing and experience. The scientific method. See a problem, hypothesize a solution, try it, test it, gather data, modify your solution, rinse and repeat. Always getting closer to the truth.

The articles cited were from almost a year ago. A lot has been learned since then and recommendations have been modified. Everyone makes mistakes, scientists, doctors, presidents, parents. A mature person admits the mistake and tries to correct it.

Cloth masks catch and hold spit and some moisture from the wearer’s breath. Not all of it but some amount. Some is better than none. And it’s recommended that you dispose or wash it frequently so it’s not a soggy petri rag.

The idea is to wear a mask during the short time you are in close quarters with people. That’s not so hard.

Continued resistance is futile. The more resistance the longer this takes. The lockdowns will continue until the powers are convinced the pandemic is over. Might as well try to do everything we can to get this over as soon as possible.
 
In other news I haven't been sick for over a year and a half.

Undoubtedly due to people staying home when they feel bad.

I thought this was common sense but apparently people need a global emergency to figure this out.

N95 masks have always been good at reducing the amount of bad shit you inhale, whether it’s droplets, bacteria, or drywall.

For them to work optimally, they have to be properly sized, fitted, and they do make breathing more difficult when they are working as intended and not all people can tolerate wearing them.

Fauci has known this. Our government has always known this. They gave misleading information about masks for God knows what reason and profiteers, the Chinese government, and our own inept government has kept these masks out of the hands of the people, many of whom could benefit from them.

I don’t think Fauci is an expert. I think he is a bitter little weasel, lifelong government parasite who is sore about being passed over for the Nobel prize and will do unethical things, within limits, to keep his cushy government job.

I think our response to the virus has been political. Both sides chose to benefit off of it, at the cost of American lives, and we really don’t want to address the sleeping dragon in the room that the Chinese government and their bioweapon lab had something to do with unleashing this upon the world.

Be that as it may, our politicians are idiots, most people just want their free money from the government, and we have done irreparable damage to our economy, our school age children, and slaughtered our precious elderly while enacting unconstitutional lockdowns.

This does not lay at the feet of any one leader, but upon the entire inept American political system.

The best I can hope for the current brain dead idiot in office is that he will not make this any worse, because government never makes anything better.

Look out for yourself and your family. Fight to get protective equipment. Fight to get vaccines. Fight to keep your livelihood. Because no one else gives a shit about you.

This is true and why the blanket statement, "I believe in the science", that is used to cudgel one side of the aisle, is a stupid statement. Those who use it typically speak in absolutes and just by using that one statement, they typically reveal the entire spectrum of their views. Believing any thing or in any person or party, wholesale, is stupid. I believe that statement stems from the global warming/climate change discussion and has been conveniently carried to propose that one side is science and the other anti-science. Science does not function in absolutes and things are not that simple. That is why tribalism and absolutes of any sort are stupid to deal in.

Masks are certainly not 100% effective. They do filter, depending on their material and fit, a certain level of particles from the air. To what extent that is effective in preventing the spread of this particular virus has shown pretty difficult to determine. Any policy that stems from those rules is subject to debate. Anyone that spouts a particular policy as science vs. anti-science has lost the plot. Policy gets even more challenging when you realize that the policy implications span well beyond the question of do they help prevent the virus spread or not.

The current model for isolation is being based off the respiratory droplets because the virus is not spontaneously mobilizing itself and drifting through the air in brownian motion, but rather gets into your nasopharynx and elsewhere predominantly through respiratory droplets.

This is pretty much what every single hospital ICU, Covid ward, government facility, aircraft, and people who deal with this every day, are basing this off of.

If the virus was able to spontaneously mobilize and move without the aid of respiratory droplets, infection rates would be substantially higher.

Are surgical masks adequate in 100% filtering out the droplets, absolutely ****ing not, but they do reduce the spread.

A lot of people are cynical, because the government lied to us and kept N95 masks away from the populace.

There is a learning curve to them, but if the average person can topple a hedge fund, fuel a car, or insert things into their rectum, I’m sure they could learn with the help of YouTube.
