All went well. I'm pretty sure it had never been done before judging from the drain, fill, and overflow plugs. The overflow plug was a bear. Twisted a high quailty German industrial grade hex wrench with a 6inch cheater on it in my first attempt to loosen it. Wound up using one of those 5 mm drive bits and a 5mm socket and rachet. Im guessing it took about 60 lbs of torque to remove. The. Old fluid smelled Ok, had absolutely no grit or any type of particles in it, The color was an interesting greyish violet. Kind of like the rinse water if you wash a new pair of Levi's wth a new cheap red t-shirt. All in all not bad for. 190k.
The Tacoma World thread was very informative. It took about 17 minutes to reach temp check temp. But, it still getspretty cold here overnight the room temp was about 37 degrees.
One thing about the factory level check proceedure given on p34 of the Tacoma World forum is that they have you overfill it by about 5/8 of a quart. The way I understood the Toyota directions you first fill to it dripping from the overflow pipe then after replacing the overflow plug you keep filling until it comes out the FILL PLUG before warming it up and checking the level. I got, as I stated, a bit more than a half quart out the overflow tube at the final level check. I'm not sure if Toyota feels the system might bleed it self better when overfilled, somethings got lost in translation, or they just feel like selling a bit extra WS.
I though of joining toco world to thank the original poster but he seem to be gone. So I'll thank Leonard one more time.
I'll do several more drain and fills over the next few hundred miles. And update my experience if something bad happens.
Edit: 6/2814 Decided to do the remaining drain and fills today. The first drain looked surprisingly clear, or better than I expected. Did 2 more for a total of apx 13.5 qts in. And I must have drained a near equal amount. I let it warm up to check temperature between drains.
Using the white paper blotter drip meathod of reading what came out the drip tube at the final check was nice and cherry red a near visual match for fresh or unused fluid. Shifts fine runs smooth. Still have a couple of questions remain about the instructions given in the service guide mentioned above.
