Drive in 2WD or 4WD on highway

you should avoid driving in 4wd on the highway. this is 4wd not awd. it is not the same system as the full time system on the v8 models. One way to tell if it's bad is to while moving very slowly turn the wheels to full lock and move forward if you get any "crow hopping" it's bad. Read your owner's manual! I have been an auto tech for almost fifteen years and am probably one of the few who actually does?

This is in the 4th gen forum, not the 5th gen. The 4th Gen V6 has a multi-mode system. It is identical to the 4th gen V8 system except that it also has a 2WD mode. In other words, the 4th Gen V6 has a Torsen center diff, and it CAN be safely driven on dry pavement in 4WD provided that the center diff is not locked (just like the V8).

Reading the manual is good advice. You should take it.

just bought a 2004 4runner limited V8 and I went to go turn the 4wd on and notice there’s only H4 and L4 and it’s already on H4. Is it always in H4? I can’t seem to find a H2 on the knob you turn

RTFM. If you have done any reading, in this forum, on this topic, you should know that the V8 system does NOT have a 2wd option. Only the V6 4th gen has this.
