Driver alertness monitor (hypothetical) does anyone know Toyota’s stance/plans?

Not sure if Toyota has this in vehicles yet, but I had heard about driver alertness controls that would slow the vehicle or disable it if certain attentiveness criteria were not met.

This seems like a huge liability if it stops or disables a vehicle passing through a stretch in which it is unsafe to stop. Someone driving to the ER, highways with no shoulder, intersections, mountain roads, bad parts of town, etc.

I see this nanny gear as something with more potential for harm than good, especially in vehicles without self driving technology to finish the trip for you.

The only thing that Toyota has now is when using Lane Tracing Assist (Lane centering), it will warn you if you take your hands on the steering wheel. It gets quite obnoxious about that.

When responsibility for driving is split between the driver and the car it makes for shoddy decision making in an oh-no situation.

Self driving cars won’t be practical unless they can communicate with one another, and even then they’d need to be segregated from the non autonomous vehicles.

I have driven vehicles that would bump the steering wheel back into the lane if you forgot to signal before merging or taking an exit.

I think we are more likely to see Alcohol Breathalyzer Immobilizer as standard required switchgear before what you are asking about. This will never happen.

Either way, OEMs will not willingly implement the type of tech you are suggesting. It will have to be driven by legislation, right or wrong.

As of 2025 or 2026 US government has mandated that all OEM auto manufacturers install a remote kill switch that will allow government, police or whomever to remote deactivate your vehicle and not allow it to restart.

People need to understand that the environmental people are like a sick Nazi cult that wont stop until none of us are driving gas fired vehicles. They want you to drive their government approved EVs which is cute as they have no power nor any grid to support such a large amount of EVs (Switzerland banned EVs last weekend due to huge negative impact on Swiss electrical grid).

Its all about control. Your social credit to low, no truck for you comrade.

The coffee cup warning is timed based only. It has nothing to do with driver alertness.

The ban being proposed on EVs in Switzerland is just a "partial" one in preparation for a possible energy crisis during the winter. There are other measures they're putting in place and its all largely due to the fact that they're dependent on imports for their energy..not a good situation to be in..

As far as driver alertness monitors go, the closest I've come was as mentioned above. Drove a rental last summer out west, we were covering some pretty long stretches of highway and the coffee cup alert would routinely pop up..Sucked because there weren't many places around to get coffee..

ITs all over the news sites. Suppose to be a temp ban this winter due to lack of hydro, followed by legislation for possible permanent ban next. Financial times had some articles on it

The remote disabling feature is being implemented by ironically a left wing government. The legislation is there for you to read. This is going in tandem with many manufacturers who are now no longer selling vehicles per say in entirety but also offering numerous vehicle features that are now monthly subscription services. Even bike MFG are doing the same, see KTM for example.

Lastly the idea of bricking a cars ECU remotely has been going on over a decade in AG with John Deere doing just that to any farm vehicle of theirs that is serviced outside factory approved shops or uses parts that are not OEM.

Your term of "misinformation" says it all. Funny how contrary opinions even based on fact are easily dismissed by people like you as disinformation.

I can't say for all, but for mine that's not entirely true. It also uses the forward camera and lane assist. If you drift over the line too much, you'll trigger the warning. Ask my wife .
