Driver side grab handle

Anyone know if the parts dept of the dealers have driver side grab handles available Why did they not put them on, there seems to be a place for them.

I'm assuming the space is there because Toyota used a universal trim for vehicles in the U.S. (driver side on the left side) and other parts of the world (driver side on the right side). I wouldn't be surprised if the passenger side handle fit on the driver side. You could always take the passenger side handle off and see if it fits and then go to your local dealership and order another or at least get the part number and find it on-line.

But if you're tall enough that handle is going to be right next to your head. And if your car takes the right(or maybe wrong) kind of impact your head is going to end up against that handle. I've thought about doing it too, but I'm 6'5" and that handle would be in my left temple in an accident. Just a thought.

Do a search on the forum. Many people have done this mod. I got the part numbers from those posts and kept them as I plan to do the mod soon.

Are you talking on the A pillar or the space right by your head? I think it's dangerous to have a grab handle right by your head and the 3rd gens had them only on the A pillar which makes it easier to hang onto when off roading instead of by your head.

Right above the head like the passenger. If it's dangerous, then it is dangerous for the passenger.

True, but the passenger holds onto it for body control so it has a purpose. The driver should be holding onto the steering wheel. I thought about it too, but I guess I don't see when I'd ever use it.

But hey, do it to it. I'll never tell someone what to do or not do to their ride.

If driving on the street both hands should be on the wheel or the right hand near the tranny lever but off road I've gotten use of the pillar handle and it's easier to control your body with the handle a bit in front of you instead of over your head.

I believe the correct term for that part is: "Oh Sh*T!" handles..

In my G35C, it was replaced with a "business card holder" so us bonking our heads while off-roading doesn't make sense.

But yeah, this is one of those things you think about on long drives. Keeping both hands on the steering wheel does get tiring. You start shifting and looking at ways to "stretch" without pulling over.

The other thing I had was a cover for the key on the driver door. I have keyless so having a place to put the key in (which I never use) seems pointless. Blends things together better.

My 09 Trail Edition came with one, I find it useful when getting in and out and for stretching on the road.

That's the a-pillar from that pic. Do you have one like that above your driver's side door? Look at your passenger side door and rear passenger side doors.

No. Not above the door, although like the others mentioned, there are covers for the bolt holes. On an 73 Datsun (blast from the past) I special ordered a handle for the driver's side. My 86 Nissan 720--yes 86 720--pickup had the handle over the door.

Dark picture...but shows the handle in place. Just buy the handle, the two covers for the screws and the longer screws and you're set. Very easy to do.

All of the handles are the same. You can pull the one from the passenger side and install it on the drivers side.

The numbers above were the parts numbers on my order--Maita Toyota in Sacramento. I got different numbers for the screws--90159-60353 2 at 1.73 ea. I paid a little more than the costs above, but less than full retail--courtesy discount.

It interferes with the visor when turned to the side and extended. I was in the passenger seat this weekend and the visor touches my head, which doesn't happen in the driver's seat because the visor can be turned closer towards the side window.

Yeah, it's too bad there is so little headroom in the 4th Gen, it might just be 'cause I'm 6'4" though. I'd like to add this handle for the exact same reason Mike gave, but I'd hit my damn head on it every time I got in or out...
