Drivers Rear Rotor / Grinding.

Hey all,

So my significant other brought her 2016 4Runner in for a brake job (64k on odo) and had all four rotors and pads replaced (Pep Boys). Initially everything seemed ok but a little over a day later and she started experiencing some rubbing noise. Since I also have a 4Runner I decided to look at mine in comparison and the clips for the rear were installed correctly. I tried to take the rotor off and the top portion of the rotor was stuck even though the E-brake was off.

Took it back to pep boys and about three hours later they called with a quote of $500 for the parking brake shoes as well as the hardware. They noted that one of the springs and the shoe retaining pin had fallen out when they removed the rotor.

We asked if the rear shoes on that wheel could be removed and the vehicle driven until we decided on the proper path for repair and were told yes so they removed the shoes on the back and buttoned it up. On the drive home we heard nothing but grinding and noticed that they had used a hammer to get the new rotor off. We ran out and picked up another rotor to put on just to test and sure enough it still grinds. At this point I am not sure what is actually causing the grinding but it is loud.

So let me ask this. Do the shoes in any way change the way the rotor sits on the hub? Would running without shoes cause some type of interference thus causing this metal on metal action I seem to be having now? We have lost confidence in the shop obviously and are somewhat pissed at the outcome but I am simply trying to sort this out.

Here is a picture of the backside of the rotor with the area of interference marked.

Purely guessing:
You're are dealing with two issues.

The scarring on the interior is left from the springs and pieces of the e-brake assembly that they found when you took it back.
The remaining noise is from the backing plate/dust shield rubbing on the back of the rotor. I'd bet that when they removed the old rotor they beat the hell out it and hit the backing plate or dropped the wheel on the plate. It seems like the noise/rubbing could have been found when you put the new rotor on.
E-brake shoes should last damn near forever. Why did the springs and clips just 'fall off' just after the Pep Boy monkey installed new rotors? They did this! Something with the e-brake assembly was damaged when they were in there.
Even if they won't make it right, new shoes and a full rear spring/clip install kit is only about $60. They were right there looking at it once; now another $500 to go back again? BullShit.
Mechanics and Doctors- Hate em.

I'd bet anything that you are right. I ordered a e-brake kit from Toyota that should be in today so once I get the rotor off I will look again to see where the possible bend is. Since I eliminated any related noise from the screwed up brake shoes by removing everything in there I should not be having this rub but it's loud as hell and by inspecting the rear of the rotor something (as you said more than likely the backing plate) is rubbing on the back of the rotor.

I'll look for rub marks again today on the actual backing plate to see if I can find the spot.

At this point with the argument had at the shop over this I will just tackle the job myself. I did the shoes on my 75 Volvo military vehicle so I will assume this will also be a shit job. :argue:

sorry you / other got screwed into replacing all the rotors. all you / other needed was a simple brake pad replacing...

so to do the park brake shoes your not gonna be happy to do this job. find a person with very small hands a difficult access job..

I have a 2016 and I did remove the rotors when new to inspect the assy from factory and I put on the rotor hub area anti seize so I can remove the rotors since I am in the rust belt this is necessary if not done very difficult to remove rotors rusted on the axle hub assy ..

park brake shoes should last the life of the runner unless driving around with the park brakes on ..

For the front rotors I've used the bolt that holds the bracket for the brake and ABS sensor and screwed it into each threaded hole on the rotor. It popped right off and the threads are the same.

up in the cold north rust belt the rotors will rust in just one winter .. road salts do damage and the rotors I have removed with no anti seize on them had to give them some whacks and spray on a rust buster and let it sit a while then whack it again.

toyota does have those threaded holes so that certainly helps remove rotor .. GM/dodge no !

post back how you had done the park brake shoe .. what issues you had and perhaps the process to help others replacing the shoes..
