Driving On Pismo Beach?

Was hoping for some locations where I can drive out on the beach near Pismo. I'm hoping to take a couple of my nieces and nephews out there and would like to hopefully find somewhere that isn't completely packed this time of the year.

I'll be heading out on a Wednesday which I'm hoping will help a little compared to the extra weekend crowds, but don't know where to begin as I'm more of a mountain guy.

Any recommendations for areas that are nice, but won't be as slammed as others? Any tips as this will be my first time at the beach? Typical 4Hi fine? Do I need to be in Lo?

I don't have a compressor to inflate, so no deflating for me. Will that be an issue? I have the stock Nitto Grapplers that come on the Pro.

Well... there is the Oceano Dunes area. You will need a whip and flag to go out there. You will definitely need to air down. If you are just looking to drive on some sand.. you can just stay near the ocean. Its a good amount of area to mess around in. 4Hi is fine. Sometimes there is a guy out there with a trailer.. $1/tire for air. Or you can go up Grand Ave to the chevron and get air there. Its not far.. so no worries if you get in a pinch and have to air down.

Wednesday shouldnt be too bad as far as crowds. I go often.. and midweek usually has the people with nosense driving out in their BMWs and getting stuck.

Bring a shovel.. maybe a tow strap. The Grand Ave is the northern entrance gives you the most driving on the beach. Grand to Pier Ave is day trippers just hanging out.. some surfers and fishing. Pier Ave south is the OHV area.. so you will have dirt bikes, quads and UTVs. Usually drunk douche bags as well. Feel free to PM me if you want anymore info

Airing down will go a long way. Hopefully you can find someone to air you back up. However, your rig should be able to handle the sand in stock form and 4Hi. Plus, you have other options at your disposal like crawl control, locking diff, etc. Go easy on the gas/brake and make wide radius turns where possible. More importantly, HAVE FUN!

It's actually a State Park, so bring $5 to drive in. I usually go mid week and it's not crowded at all. You will be surprised at what you can do out there in your rig, so get off the beach and get out in the dunes and play. As for airing down, it's absolutely a must in sand. Take them down to 18-ish lbs. and have fun. The dunes are right in town, so drive to a gas station t refill isn't going to hurt anything. Basic sand driving skills and you can take your truck anywhere a buggy will go.

Pro tip: the wind blows the sand from from the ocean, causing steep ledges. When driving with the ocean to your back, use caution! The drops can be hard to see and when people forget, they die. Have fun out there, you'll love it!
