Dual Batteries on the Cheap

I plan to attempt something similar using this box: CLEARANCE - Odyssey PC 1400 Battery Mount - POWDERCOAT

on my Group 35 diehard platinum, once I figured how to work this darn welder that is.

Will report back in about a year, lol.

PS: Pat I am so f-in lazy I still haven't ordered a shielding gas tank since the last time I talked to you over the summer :frusty:

well any night you want to run up to school, we can do it in the back shop..my miller's all set up there..

All your help and generosity is effectively making mine into a very expensive blue paper weight :hurt:

I kid, let me get around to ordering that artec box and I'll post pics and we can brain storm together...my plan right now is welding up a base bracket that moves the PS pump outwards and clears the AC line rubber isolator doohickey; then just bolting that box to the bracket via the counter sunk holes already drilled into the base of that box. Easier said than done!

I did preliminary measurements and a test fit with the battery only and it looks like I might have just about enough room to play with because the Group 35 is not as big as them 34s you guys are squeezing in the ABR trays.

how about this?

Add-A-Battery Kit - 120A - Blue Sea Systems

Has anyone thought about going this route? I've been digging around and have only seen one comment in passing that you loose more voltage across a relay than using a standard solenoid, but that doesn't seem like too much of an issue.

Yes, the alternator is 140A and the relay is rated for 120A continuous with a 5 minute max rating at 210A. Anyone who knows their electrical, do you see any issues?

I'm assuming for redundant safety reasons that you would still want to run 150A fuses between the batteries.

Diehard Platinum 31M Battery Tray

and you're asking ME that?!?...silly boy...I'm playing "monkey see, monkey do"

Thanks Grant, good stuff there!.....as stated above I am using #2 but with 80 amp fuses. I did use the PAC500 btw....found it on fleabay for like 70 smackeroos!

Ok..pic time..

Here's the way it right now...Starting battery..

Where I'd like to mount the fuse holders..what say the Collective?? Everything can be disconnected very easily and quickly in the event I have to get into the air cleaner or fuse box..thoughts (please hurry though)

The air cleaner side...

Hi,

I am also planning to install Diehard Platinum 31M in my 2010 4runner. I am considering to follow your installation but there are some insights need your valuable experience:

1. Did you use any battery tray to mount the main battery (Diehard Platinum 31m) OR you just simply trim the stock battery tray)? Looks like you did not use any aftermarket battery tray. Is that secured to have this heavy monster under the hood during this period of time?

2. Have you drive any off-road or bumpy roads, did the battery lose out of its original position?

3. Does the main battery (31m) totally sits on the bottom?

It would be great to share your experience !

Thank You

I too am a big fan of KISS and know from personal experience that not only does Mr. Murphy live but he also a evil SOB with a wicked sense of humor.

I have the exact same batteries but when all is said and done I will not be using the secondary terminals because if I'm who knows where and must replace (buy or steal) it there is a good chance I will not find the same type with extra terminals. The last thing I'm going to want to do is start rewiring everything to fit on just two terminals.

Each of us has different comfort levels - nothing wrong with that. But still a interesting set up. Please do keep us updated on how it works long term. :thumb3:

Long term it worked good Dave, it was flawless up to when the truck sold last month.

After reading this thread, I plan to follow all of Titanpat57 's electrical advice because:

1. He admits to being ignorant about most of it,
2. He, too, thinks it involves black magic and unicorns because that's the only way to explain why it works, and
3. He's still alive.

PS- I don't remember taking those pictures, but uh they are aweful. Welcome to the club bro!

I just saw this and holy crap those pictures are god awful and very Antman like!!!
Where are the pictures of the new truck, can't find them. Then again if you took the pictures of it I may not even want to view them.

Probably a couple of post in "What did you do in your 5th gen".....some of us actually do shit to our trucks besides watching them sit in the driveway, and make payments on them.

Thanks for the picture compliment. ..Antman said I did real good...lol.

He wants to call the new truck the "Sperm Whale". Also started a build thread on Mud in the 150 section.

"Sperm Whale" fits, don't it? lmao

I just finished this tonight! 2016 Trail.

I have the shrockworks dual battery tray for the second battery (an oddessy 34r (not the extreme)) and o2 pump relocation. Getting my Northstar battery tomorrow for the original spot, got a 27 and gonna use the stock tundra tray.

I did this for my fridge and my cpap while away from 120v. Leaving for Taos NM on Thursday and gonna test the system out.

I spent more than $50, but got a very good Solenoid, 4 gauge welding wire, and blue sea fuse holders. I also got the fuse replacement than bumps alt voltage to 14-ish volts.

Batteries are the most expensive part of the system, but you could run the stock battery and a deep cycle as the house battery.

Hey Pat , have you done this on your second rig?

Any lessons learned form the first install?

I thought the first install was pretty straight forward...as far as I know it's still working fine.

For the second truck I opted for a single group 31, and a 100w solar panel...so far, very happy. I do carry a li-ion "jump pack" in the event I do run out. I saved money and weight.

Sooooo worth it.

Thanks for reminding me to get on this!

Enjoy..it's a simple solution

anyone done this on 5th gen and not spent a bunch of money on batteries??? Also how do you get the battery to fit??

Read up about 2nd battery installs...there's a ton of info out there

I think I spent around 100$ not including the Aussie tray or battery
