Dumb mistake, now no starting

I stupidly left the key in the on position in my '96 for a week and drained the battery. The battery (a new Die Hard), takes a charge, but when I try to start it drains instantly - no cranking, nothing but the ammeter going to 0 as soon as I turn the key.
Anyone have an idea as to what I fried? I live 20 miles away from the nearest parts house and I am not really experienced at electrical issues.

Def sounds like battery issue. Did you put it on a trickle charger? If it was a new battery it is unlikely you killed a cell but guess it could be possible. You could have a surface charge that shows spec but fails under load. This is why shops use a load tester to check a battery.

I charged it with a 2 amp charger. Tried jumping it and got same results (while connected to the other vehicle).

Have you tried jumping it and seeing if it will charge that way with the engine running?

I would take it to the parts store and have them test it. If bad it will be warrantied and you can get a new one.

If you have a battery that is killed, even jumping may not work. I agree, take the battery for a test.

You can try jumper cables to another car battery if around, without starting the other car, if it starts, you know the battery is toast. New or old, battery cells can go. I see brand new cars with new batteries have bad cells all the time. Good luck, hope it works out
