If I'm not planning on running sliding drawers, would I still need the brace boards or plywood on the bottom? Thinking about weight saving options. Thanks!
use 1x8 pine. actual dims .75"x7.5" and a sheet of 19/32 ply. Its more than enough strength, will save a lot of weight, and its cheap. Cheap is important, because once you build your first one, chances are you're going to want to change something at some point. Also, going more than 8 inches sacrafices a LOT of headroom. I have a single slide-less drawers resting on carpet since slides work so well you have to be conscious of uneven ground. other side is blank with a shallow tray that slides in and extra space for a tote or my bike tools. quickly interchangeable for different trips was the name of the game. All said and done I've less than $50 into it. I do plan on re-doing the whole thing at some point in the future once i learn exactly what I need... as well as a welder
Then the engineering will run wild. It's a very fun project that you customize to your needs. And remeber, not everything has to be centered, one drawer wider for a stowe away table you already own! go wild.OP, I do like your compartment in front of the drawers. I've debated one to either use for a subwoofer, aux battery i can pull out to charge, a slim water tank, or just storage.

wow this is pretty cool. i like how you are able to retain the backseat. although if i were to do this, id probably completely delete them as i never have more than one person in my vehicle and would want as much storage and sleeping room.

yes pretty much. what is the hatch up front for? just more general storage? 160 lbs doesnt seem too bad, especially all stretched out like that.

My platform is a 2 piece build since 1 full unit would way too heavy to move. The rear most section has 2 full length drawers on 48" slides. The front most section has 2 large flip lids, 2 small removable lids, and water storage under the front lip. The front is bolted to the factory seat bolt location, and rear is tied through the body. More than enough space to live out for 5 weeks like we did a couple years ago.
The platform will be for sale within the next month to make run for the next platform deform design.

I was more concerned with vetting out keeping a 3rd seat. The slide out function is really badass. I can convert it to a passenger seat in 4 quick moves. Or take out the last seat completely for storage when I know it’s just the female and I. Still a work in progress to see what I really need in the drawers and what material to finnish with on top. Ive only done 2 weekends with it, It works for now until I decide what can improve the weekend mtb/ski trips.

Awesome build, and very well thought out! I'm very new to woodworking but think this is manageable. Is the bottom part of the box necessary for drawer function/stability? Seems like without it, I could save a lot of weight. Cheers to a great build

Awesome dwmckeehen. Thanks for sharing way back when. I just spent the last hour trying to find this post, after remembering it but having a hard time getting it to come up in searches. Not sure how it got so buried... Maybe because it's not tagged for the generation or year? Thanks for the detail on this. I've got a 4th gen 2006 and I'm hoping these concepts can be used for it.
