Effects of shocks in ride quality

How big of a factor are the shocks in ride quality? Obviously things such as the stiffness and spring rate of the coils are huge factors, but what about shocks?

The reason I am asking is I am trying to figure out which shocks to put in the back, as I am not too thrilled with the Icons. Just curious how much it could effect the ride quality by upgrading the shocks.

I think that shocks are a BIG factor in ride quality. Springs are there to compress and extend, but it is the shocks that control the movement of the spring. Almost every new car nowadays that come out has some new fancy feature on their shocks to improve ride and handling. I don't hear too miuch about breakthrough technology on springs (exception being the airmatic suspension on MB and other luxury brands).

In other words, a shock can make or break a ride. When i had my 3rd gen 4runner, i added Bilsteins shocks and it made the ride significantly worst than stock shocks. Shocks play a big role in handling, bounciness, stiffness, and floatiness of a car...remember, shocks control the spring movement. Of course, the best ride comes from a perfect interaction between spring AND shock. This is why, after the experimentation with my 3rd gen, i am hesitant to mess around with stock suspension on cars. Engineers spend hours and days and weeks on designing the stock suspension...they know about compromises and what is needed on the car. I doubt that any of these aftermarket vendors spend that much time on their suspension kits. So, you now have to mix & match components by trial and error...at your cost. For example, i remember reading about how cheap the OME shocks were when i was researching lift kits for my 4runner many moons ago. Some of these vendors concentrate on the lift look and cheapen the shocks. Either they suck right out of the box or that they degrade quickly (OME) with use.

Remember also to ask people how they like certain shocks AFTER at least a few MONTHS of use. Almost universally (me included), the first few days (honeymoon period) after buying a shock, the ride is magically better than stock. However, the best reviews on a shock are after a period of time...then the real characteristic of the ride comes out.

Why are you not happy with Icon shocks?? Too stiff?? Too soft??

Good luck.

ive got & like the bilsteins out back, (7-8 months now) not too firm, just right for me, but i dont carry alot of cargo or haul a trailer either.

Shocks are VERY important to a suspension system. I recall when I was a young'n, way back in the early 70's, I used to race motocross, and I & my fellow racers were always looking at shocks changes with the goal of keeping the wheels on the ground as much as possible. The goal here may be different, as these aren't racing vehicles, but I'd be willing to bet that the proper shock valving and such is crucial to a good ride.

Which shock is best for you depends on you. If you're gonna off-road, you might want something besides stock; something which focuses on off road performance. But for standard street driving, I'm gonna stick with the OEM. As has been pointed out, much skull sweat has been spent on the combination.

:iagree: with the other guys...

As mentioned fade can be an issue. Shocks also seem to need a week a two to break-in. Once you've got a couple of weeks on them you know what you have.

The last thing is people talk about stiff vs softer shocks: IMHO another equally/more important aspect to shocks is compression vs rebound proportioning. A 50/50 usually doesn't ride that well at sane speeds. Too little compression and it'll bottom too easily, too much rebound and the wheels will spend too much time light or airborne. No dampening and you're riding a pogo stick. As you shop shocks consider compression vs rebound rates as well as other aspects. I like a little less compression and little more rebound. I am not a fast or aggressive driver though.

Won't ICON revalve yours?

i totaly agree that the shock & spring should compliment each other. but some people want a firmer, more response ride, i for one, think the stock springs & shocks are way too marshmellowy. ( not reffering to the x) too much nose dive, side to side sway, etc. for me. i dont want/think/exspect a 4x4, truck, etc. to ride like a cadilac . you guys that have had older power wagons, jeeps, broncos, scouts ,etc. know what im saying. sorry if that bothers anybody, but then again, the newer 4th gen. isnt that type of vec. but you can still improve upon the factory setup & kind of have/eat your cake too,

shocks

well put cj3flyer. its a to each to his own thing. i like a fast rebound from bumps , the next guy may like a softer return. if a person does theyre research, (others exsperience) & has some exsperience of theyre own with certain products , hopefully, it shouldnt/wont be very costly to them.

Alright, thanks guys.

Thai, they just don't ride great, and I talked to a few guys on T120 about it through PM's, and none of them are impressed either. Many have switched to other brands such as KING, or gotten bigger shocks than the 2.0's by Icon, such as piggy backs.

Just trying to decide which route to take, so I'll need to do some research. I can either get SAW's for about $450 and match everything else, or try KING remote resi's for about double that.

Is this really true?
I did a lot of research on this forum, the toyota120 forum, and all over the web about OME lift kits and I have never run accross anything that said the OME shocks wore out quickly.

I'd like to know more about this.
If you have any links then that would be nice.

I don't know if they wear out fast or not. Only had mine on for like 2 months. They rode like crap, and kicked like hell if you had ANY speed whatsoever while offroading. This is for the rear components though, Not sure about the fronts.

Kicked? Like they were too stiff or rebounded too quickly?

Could it have been due to the higher spring rate compared to the factory springs (if you were using the 895)?
Which shock did you have, the 141 or 142?

Thanks for any info.

I had the lighter coils and shocks since I don't have a rear bumper. So yes, 895's and N141.

So was the ride harsh? Too bouncy? Not rebound quickly enough?

Stiff, lifted too high (supposed to be about 2-2.5" and mine was closer to 3". It also kicked when we went fast, as you mentioned, it rebounded too high. I have a dent in the back of my truck from an ice chest that became air born.
