just got back from a weekend of exploring with the family, mostly in the george washington national forest (GWNF). came across quite a few jeepers that were out (and one unimog), very few other 4x4s.
one of the trails that we did was by crab tree falls. this trail is probably the max that a stock 4runner can do without receiving too much damage. i should never have done the trail solo(especially since the kids were along), because the trail had quite a few sections that were covered in ice. getting stranded out there would have been less than ideal!
i had a lot of fun pushing the 4runner to its limits and came away immensely impressed with the ATRAC system. i have used this system often in the past, and have even been quite frustrated with them in both the sand and the snow, but i was delighted at how well the did with the slippery rocks and the steep slopes (up and down), especially those that had ice. the system performed top notch, and i can say for the first time that i got to places that my '94 toy pickup or my '93 4runner could not have.
when we neared the end of the trail i came to a downhill section of about 200ft that was covered in ice. i did not want to turn the rig into a 5000lb toboggan, so i turned it around and headed back.
the ATRAC and antilock breaks certainly proved their usefulness on this trip, what a blast!
