Emissions Test Problems - Can't read my T4R

I searched through the first 5 pages of results for "emissions" and couldn't find anything.

I took my T4R for emissions testing on Saturday and their equipment wouldn't read my ECU. Tried it on 3 different computers at 1 station and then drove to another with the same result. It even crashed one of the testing computers in the process.

My OBDLink MX+ and iData Maestro work fine. The reader at Autozone reads fine.

Has anyone else run in to these problems before? I thoughts on what to do about getting it fixed?

If it were in warranty I would have already taken it to the dealer but it's a 16 with 112,000 miles.

Thanks in advance for any help!

What is the emissions warranty in TN? If close, then I'd call Toyota Corporate and open a case. The Federal regs are 8 years, 80k miles, so you are still within the time limit.

They'll probably refer you to a dealer, but they might just foot all or part of the bill.

Unfortunately I'm 32,000 miles passed the warranty :(

Yes, but you're still in the 8 years emissions period.

When customers are in either the time or mileage part of a warranty and have an unusual failure, the manufacturers may elect to do a goodwill repair and pay for all or part of the repair.

I know nothing about how TN does their inspections, so you could try another testing station. As an alternative to calling Toyota, you could (if you have any relationship with the dealer) stop by a dealer and say "the Autozone scanner sees my OBDII info, but the state one doesn't. Have you heard of that issue before?

Well no good will offered at either dealership near me, but based on the reason for the issue I wouldn't expect it.

The problem was the iDatalink Maestro. Apparently the unit has gone bad and was shorting the OBDII to ground.

Before taking to the dealer I started noticing random behavior on my reader. Sometimes it would pull the VIN sometimes it wouldn't. I spoke with the tech several times today as he was chasing things down and finally when he completely removed the Maestro from the 4Runner altogether, then all of my systems started working properly.

Guess I'll be driving around without tunes while I work with Crutchfield to get a replacement.

Good that you found the problem, but the "goodwill repair" wouldn't be by the dealer, but by Toyota (hence my recommendation to CALL Toyota).

In this case, you probably should have mentioned that you had an electrical mod because that makes it your problem and not Toyota's - as you found out.

Please let us know what Crutchfield says. You may want to edit your first post to say that the issue was found so that others with a similar problem can find the resolution.
