Ended up with 2WD

Like some of the guys on this thread. I also have a 2011 2WD 4runnner but with Auto LSD. I live out in the Pacific Northwest (about 30 minutes north of Seattle) and want to take it out to some trails for some light overlanding and camping. Not expecting to do any deep mudding or crawling and stuff like that, but want it capable to handle some of the trickier forest roads a non-lifted vehicle couldn't handle, puddles, and occasional obstacles. I've seen some guys on YouTube do some crazy stuff with a good lift, bigger tires, and at least having the Auto LSD running.

I had a situation where my wife and I were driving up a forest road mountain. And came across a lot of potholes and big puddles, currently, the Runner is all stock. And we immediately turned around because I didn't want to do anything stupid with a completely stock vehicle. We probably could have made it. But didn't want to risk it. So I want to upgrade based on what new obstacles I come across and go from there and responsibly see how far the 2WD can take me off-road then maybe upgrade.

I was about to just order either an Eibach Stage or 1 or 2 lift and so I can get 285s on it. I was reading through some other threads, and it sounds like a 2WD drive lift is approached differently? Or am I mistaken?

Or do I just order the typical set of front and rear shocks with rear springs?

I had an uncle who was one of the pioneers in racing=designed a car that had the world's speed record at Bonneville, crew chief for Mickey Thompson @ Indy, managed Lion's Drag Strip, etc.

One year he was pre-runner for Thompson, together with Bill Stroppe. Stroppe was pulling stuck 4WD out with a 2WD Tacoma with a winch. I think that was the year Thompson & Dick Cepek got stranded on the beach by the hurricane.

In a nutshell, get a Hi Lift, a winch and traction mats and you will be good to go!

Wow, this is an old thread.

2wd 4runners were a great option a few years ago. Aside from reliability, it would be hard to compare them to the countless unibody SUV’s on the market now.

Given today’s shortage and marked up 4runner prices, Toyota should only crank out 4x4’s 5th gens moving forward. I have no doubt they will still clear inventory.
