Engine Bay Whine

I had this same problem with my 99 POS Blazer. It turned out to be the alternator bearings. It would still charge good but who knows when the alt will fail. This same noise just started happening to my 2000 4Runner (OEM alt @ 97k). Still charges @ 14.0 volts but who knows how long it will last. Does anyone know where to find a OEM replacement cheap?
 
I didn't hear anything. Are you sure it is not Tinnitus from that kicker you have. :whipping2




I'll listen to it again when we do your Load Sense valve delete this Thursday.

Haha, yea maybe we can take off the belt to the compressor while we are at it and see if it resolves the issue
 
After the engine has had time to cool sufficiently, touch the alternator with your bare hand it should be completely cool to the touch. Then start the truck, and carefully touch the alternator and other sub-componets without getting your hand caught in anything that can rip your hand off. feel for a sub-componet such as the alternator that is very hot - very fast. Usually when there is a whine it is an indication of something about ot fail and is also accompanied by excessive heat. . I hope this helps..

They also make a stethiscope with a needle type end on it that can be used to track down the sound. Not sure how much they cost.
 
Well I met up with Singtoe today and we resolved the issue. It was the lower idler pulley at the compressor, it was toast. Thanks everyone for your advice!
 
Sorry to threadjack casey but i changed my timing belt and timing drive gear on the crank last week and now i have a low kid of whirring sound coming from the motor but only agt idle? idk what it could be any ideas?
 
Bump thread, I've got this same problem after a water crossing surprised me with it's newfound depth. I went floorboards under for 10 feet and water peaked over the hood at the first go through. Now I'm humming like I stole the car from a pull-a-part. Like you've all kinda said it sounds like power steering. But it's turning strong as ever and I'm simply not convinced. Lets get more people to show their viewpoints and experience. This isn't going to be a fun fix I can tell

I came here to see about my engine bay whine and mine started out from a scenario very similar to yours.

Within the past 20K water pump and all associated parts in the path were replaced, and alternator was rebuilt. So I doubt it was those..

If you or anyone else figured out what it was, I would appreciate the feedback.

Will update when I solve mine.
