Engine Chatter While Accelerating

[99 Problems]

So I've recently sunk a lot of money in my 1999 4Runner SR5 3.4L V6 (5 speed manual) and now I've discovered a new issue.

When I shift to the next gear and accelerate I get a chattering noise coming from the engine. It's only while accelerating after shifting into a higher gear and only noticeable under 1500 rpms. No noise while in Neutral.

I know for a fact that my camshaft seals and valve covers leak oil while driving longer distances. It burns oil and runs down the engine and never puddles. I have to put in a quart every 1000 miles or so. Don't if this makes a difference or helps in any way but I'd love to hear opinions!

I've done some searching on the forums on engine chattering but most people seem to have a constant chatter while mine only occurs while accelerating under 1500rpms.

I don't think it's pinging, more of a vibration/chatter. Standard gas in Canada which I believe is 89 Octane.

You got detonation............put a good fuel system cleaner in it that eats carbon for a few tanks and try the highest octane. It has more cleaner in it.

You could be lugging it as well. 1500 sounds a bit low to me.

Yeah thats true too. I've been advised to switch gas stations and that could fix it. Maybe I'll shift at higher rpms so I'm above 1500 in my next gear.

I'm not sure if it's been there the past 10 months or not. I've had multiple other problems I've been fixing in that time and haven't noticed this until everything else was fixed. Thanks for the advice though!

Haha, I have no idea. I've been spending my day trying to figure it out, too. I'm leaning towards a resonance with the exhaust. My stock exhaust was replaced before I bought it, but it still looks OEM. My only worry is that I'm having stalling issues, too.

I read your post. I don't know if it's the same issue but when there was lots of dew in the morning or it was raining out my truck would run like shit and misfire. I replaced the plugs and wires and that solved the issue. Now I have this noise which a few people have mentioned in detonation.

I'm going to add some injector cleaner in the next few tanks and remove carbon buildup in the throttle body/IAC valve (did I mention I have a high idle that's also rough?) Fingers crossed these two things bring my driveability back.

Have you heard of these guys? My buddy that races cars uses them. I've never seen it mentioned in a forum, but I'm very curious about trying them out. Not sure about that price for a non-performance application, but it would be very interesting to know if there's a noticeable difference.

I actually just read something on the forums about this. Not these specific guys but injector cleaning without adding it to your fuel. I'm not 100% on the process but they blast this stuff through your engine to clean your injectors.

Might be worth it if the standard cleaner doesn't help!

Brian2sun had it done to his before he finally found out he had a cracked head. He still said if made a big difference. It's called Motor vac.

Hard to say without hearing/feeling but are you sure it's the engine. I had a ticking/clicking sound that 1st seemed to come from the front and only happened on acceleration. In the end my issue turned out to be bad ujoint in the double cardon on the rear drive shaft.

Front and rear u-joints were done about 6 months ago so I'd doubt it's that. I grease them every oil change as well

I'm going to try some fuel injector cleaner and see where that gets me.

I'm almost positive it's not my pinion bearing since I just did an axle swap because my old axle's was completely gone. I know what that noise is, and that's more of a constant humming at higher speeds.
