Engine confusion

Hi guys, I am trying to figure out the engine configurations for 3rg gen 4Runners. I read a quote somewhere that stated the best motors for this generation are 1996-2002 with 3rz or 5vzfe engine codes, but how do I know if a particular truck has one of these two motors?

Is the "3400 FOUR CAM 24" one of these motors (this is in a 2000 year model I am looking at).

Thx!
Mike

Look below the upper radiator hose on the timing cover of that engine. It'll say 5vz-fe. If it doesn't say that then it's not one. The 2000 models have the 5vz-fe.

a 3rd gen 4runner should have one of two motors, the 3rz or 5vz, thats it. if it has something else it has been swapped in. typically the only motors swapped into these are V8s, like the 4.0 1uz(lexus) or the 4.7 2uz(toyota)... then there is the random GM Vortec V8s...

but yeah the 2.7l 3rz and the 3.4l 5vz are the motors that are found in the 3rd gen 4runner 1996-2002

OK, so any 3rd gen that has it's original motor has one of the "good" engines, correct? I was told to stay away from the 3.0 V6, but I don't think the 3rd gens came with those, right?

Thx again,
Mike

3.0 v6 from the 2nd gens, up to 1995. Worst toyota motor made. Some of the 3rd gens came with a 4 cylinder. If its the 1996-2002 v6 will be the good one always.
