Engine cuts out at high speeds?

Figured I would post here since my 91 has a 3.4 under the hood.

Anyways on the highway I was cruising at around 70, which is around 3k rpm with my gearing and tires. I usually don't go any faster because of this but yesterday I got her up to 85 ish, which was around 3500-3600 rpm and after about 2 min the engine cut out, felt similar to being in a car when traction control turns on. it cut out twice and then went to normal after I backed off of it a little bit, and I was able to replicate the phenomena a few minutes later.

Anyone have an idea on why it would do this?

My rig is a 91 4runner w/ '99 3.4l and stock 91 transmission

Fuel pump going out?

If you drive in another gear, at the same RPMs for a while, will it also cut out? If you drive along at that engine speed and it doesn't cut out, but then you go up a hill, does that cause it to die?

Haven't tried as I don't like to wind it up too much haha. Now it's parked out of town till I can get to the leaky rear main. Which I'm assuming would not be the cause of this...

Nope but still an issue none the less! It's not really a hard job though, just find a machine shop (NAPA does it for a good price) to press the new bearings on and it'll be a piece of cake.

Have you ever changed the fuel filter? That's what it sounds like to me. They are not a lifetime part, regardless of what Toyota says. I think it's only like $30 and not hard to do as long as the compression nuts are not rusted on. Though do soak them overnight in oil before trying to get them off.

3-4k rpm is not really winding it up that much. When towing on larger hills, its a common thing when i down shift bring the rpms up to 3500+ while driving up the hill.

I would check out fuel filter as well, sounds like system cannot maintain enough fuel for the higher rpms.

Sure you downshift to get up a hill, but I don't want to run it at 3500+ for hours on end, ya know?
