Engine dies after ignition?!!

So it was a cold and extremely foggy morning, I started it up just fine. And I was off.

I drove the engine about 10 mins before I parked and shut off the engine for about 3 mins. Then I tried to start it up again.

Immediately after the cylinders started to move on their on without the crank, the rpm gauge would slowly fall to 0 rpm. Not immediately fall like one shutting of his engine on purpose.

I did this for 2 times before on the third time I gave it a little gas after starting up. Then I slowly let off the gas pedal and then it was fine.

Whats happening? Alternator problems?

does it still produce full power? If it doesnt it is most likely youre maf sensor. It could also be a bad oxygen sensor. Is your check engine light on?

It seems to produce full power- I can't really tell. I got this car used. It's been maintenance by mechanic. So I really never had a baseline reading of the power to begin with.

I just installed a K&N cold air intake about 2.5 months ago if that might mean anything. The filter was pre-oiled from factory. Do you think that some of that oil fubar the maf sensor?

Edit: Check engine light is not on as I drive.

Yes that might be part of the problem. I installed a k&n filter with the deckplate mod and about a month later my check engine light came on. The maf was dirty. You can remove the maf (just 2 screw holes) and spray the small sensor that looks like a needle with brake cleaner and spray/blow it out with air. Then replace.

wow! what a difference it made.

i think your maf for the '99 is different from mine '97. I had to dismantle my k&n FIPK to get to the huge maf and the housing (it was one piece).

yeah, so i cleaned it electrical contact cleaner from radioshack. it runs much smoother now at idle, and more responsive. THANKS!

Just wanted to chime in and let you know that with the higher flow air filters, the MAF sensor will get dirty much more frequently. I would just make sure that the bulb for the check engine light is in there and working because it should have come on when the vehicle was stalling out.
