Engine Knocking/Tapping? (Video)

I have nothing more to add except this kinda sounds like my V6. Valvetrain noise and ticking are the norm for this rigs. I dunno, how does yours drive? Is it smooth? Abnormal MPG? Abnormal oil consumption? LIke I said, mine sounds about the same, but when driving, it's smooth as butter.

It drives smooth, MPG is 16/20, doesn't use any oil in between changes. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.
 
Sounds normal. I would wager that you're hearing the VSV (vacuum switching valve). I thought the same thing when I bought mine. Unplug it for a quick second and the noise should stop (or give it a quick rev and it will stop, then start again). Only heard on the driver side.

I'll throw in another voice as that's exactly what my previous '05 V6 2wd SR5 sounded like. Following when I bought it in late '13, I put 100k on it (96k > 198k) and never faced anything outside of ordinary maintenance & repair (5k oil, case fluid xfer, alternator swap, etc.) Obviously mine is a one-off, limited case, but I feel like if the noise was an issue, it would have shown up in a much bigger way at some point in the time I owned it.

Is there a recommended swap for the timing chain on the V6? I just traded my V6 SR5 for a V8 Limited, and one of the primary maintenance concerns was the timing belt. My understanding was that the V6 has a timing chain, and therefore timing, for the lifetime of the truck, isn't a concern. :twitch:
 
Timing chain isnt forever. As it ages it will create slack and thus sounding abnormal (or sounds like diesel as people say).
 
The first video I posted starting at 16 seconds is where you can really here the "knocking". I'm not sure if it's the VSV sound or not. Could in be exhaust?
 
I bought my 04 V6 with 136k on it a couple of years ago. I immediately changed the oil to Mobil 1 5w30 and not much later I noticed that it too had a ticking or tapping sound at idle. I thought about trying 10w30 to see if it would quiet it down. Instead, I switched to Pennzoil conventional 5w30 and the motor is now quiet as can be. I couldn't tell you if it was switching brands of oil or going from synthetic to conventional that did it but it sure did make a difference.

Excuse me, I read too fast. I was assuming it was a V8. Its notorious for us V8 guys to have that same sound and issue. With that being said i wouldn't complete cross that out as a possible issue.
 
Mine sounds similar to post #1. I tried to make a video, but it comes out really bad with my camera for some reason. As with yours, it's only when warm and idled down. I'd say it's more pronounced and higher frequency on driver's side.

I'll do the next oil change myself to know what's going in and see what happens.

Other than that, I've seen that the oil pressure at idle for these engines is only like 5 psi. My GM has a gauge which goes to 60 at startup, and then never drops below 30. The red area on it seems to go up to about 10.

I've also recently learned about the copper-plugs that should be changed every 30K, and the valve adjustment @ 60K intervals. Perhaps I need to do those...
 
One way to be sure where the ticking/knocking is coming from is with an auto mechanic's stethoscope, if you don't have one they're a great tool for pin-pointing these types of mystery sounds, you can even use a very long screwdriver or even a dowel or old broom handle for a makeshift stethoscope, it not as easy to get into tight areas but just stick the screwdriver or handle on a suspected area and press your ear against the other end you will be amazed at what you can hear doing so, JUST BE VERY CAREFUL OF ALL MOVING PARTS OF THE ENGINE WHEN USING ONE!!

Everyone that does their own mechanic work or just their own troubleshooting should own a mechanic's stethoscope, you can buy one from around $3 to $4 and on up to $100+ for high electronic versions, most all auto parts stores sell affordable version!!

The V6 engine ticking sound can be fixed with a couple of rubber washers. I had done this to my 2008 V6 Tacoma. I got mine at Ace Hardware. The bolt is 10mm and the rubber washers are 6mm.

After reading that topic, most say adding the rubber washers does very little to solve the ticking issue, but does make the ticking not as loud, what I did read was those switching to premium gas says the ticking goes away completely and they save a little money in the long run by getting a little bit better mileage.

That would imply it's "pinging" more than ticking and I could see that. Though usually pinging complaints are under load.
