Engine swap: Is this a fair price?

I posted a picture of my bent camshaft the other day on my 2000 4runner. I literally just got this car not even a month ago and am now dealing with getting an engine swapped in (unless i'm able to get the dealership to take it back :violin: ) and i got this quote. Lemme know what y'all think!

The quoted price sounds about right to me. But maybe someone more experienced will chime in. Just got it and it needs an engine? If you bought it from a dealer I would definitely do whatever possible to lighten punishment on the wallet. Most of the time those dealers are snakes. Sorry to hear of the misfortune.

That sounds about right for the motor price. I bet its marked up around $500 though. LKQ is a good company. That labor price is really cheap. Im used to $119/hour at my dealer lol.

2,400 is a lot for a used engine. Sure 80k miles is low but one with 150k will drive just the same. There's JDM engines for much cheaper.

Wowzer!!! You could buy a rebuilt with a warranty for only a few hundred more.

I bought it through a Honda dealership who gave me all kinds of verbal assurance that i was getting a DEAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!! But yeah i'm in the process of working with the legal aid offered through my school to get them to take it back rather then deal with small claims. I got this quote merely for ammunition against them and also a starting point if i end up getting screwed over.

Just get a motor for one of the JDM places and have a wrenching party If I was near I would give you a hand motor swap is really and easy thing to do. If you have all the right tools

Do you get kissed with that used engine?

I paid $800 for mine with 60k on the odometer. I'd want to know what additional parts they're estimating for as well. Are they going to install a new timing belt/water pump?

That labor quote sounds reasonable, but the engine quote is ridiculous.
You should be able to get a JDM with less miles for under a thousand dollars.
BTW, I got a 200k motor that ran perfect sitting in my garage you can have for 600.00 if you wanna come get it.

I think my LKQ remaned engine was around $2,200 with a 3yr warranty. The quote for assembly is what is getting me. It says it does not include transfer of Valve covers, manifolds, or the oil pan. But yet it mentions new oil and filter... how can you do that and not replace the pan? The price for in and out doesn't seem to bad though.

I bought it at Premier Honda in New Orleans East not even 30 days ago. AVOID THIS DEALERSHIP PLEASE GOD.

The quote i got from the shop (hypothetically) is all inclusive of the work necessary for the complete engine swap including timing belt, water pump and i was gonna check the oil pump prior to installation to see if it needed a new one. They assured me the swap covered everything.

Today is the day i get with my lawyer to find out if i'm able to wash my hands of this whole situation and pick up another runner out in the Bay Area in a few weeks. Wish me luck!

:hello: that wouldn't of been the blue one perhaps? I was looking at a blue 4wd near there or it may have been at the Allstar Kia dealership.


The dealer will probably stand on their "As Is" policy BUT they should cover most of the cost at the least to be fair.

Following up,

After talking with my lawyer he basically told me to take the money and run as Louisiana is an AS IS state :gun6:

Unless there is a way i can prove negligence on their part i'm screwed. So, in the mean time, i'm going to go ahead and have the work done.

Finally have my 4runner back and it's running like brand new! I'm glad I went with the LKQ motor with the warranty now. Thanks for your input everyone!
