Engine Tapping/Ticking Noise

My new 2019 TRD OR has the little tick at idle as well. That doesn't other me. You should hear my wife's Hyundai Santa Fe. It's got injector tick that's alot more noticeable and it's been like that since new as well. One noise I thought was different on the 4runner is the massive rush of air at the front of the vehicle when you first start it up. These things must have awesome electric fans!

I would hear that and think something is wrong. Glad I know it’s nothing to be concerned about. My new to me SR5 has the most minimal knock/tick ( like I have to REALLY) listen for me to notice.

Personally I love the sound of the rockers at low idle in the drive through between walls, the click clack sounds they make and the way you can hear the timing chains whirring away, lets you know everything is turning! Enjoy it LoL. Like someone said - the only way to quiet that down is sound deadening of which there isn't much up front. With the temperature changes we experience in these parts I wouldn't stray from 0W-20, small oil passages in these engines are likely the reason that weight is specified so I'd rather not have thicker oil in it unless you live in climates where it's never a cold start.

Yeah mine sounds about the same. It’s louder on the right side like it’s coming from the lifters or fuel injection pump.

I still suspect some debris is stuck in there.. engine gulped a bit of sand once and sounds were louder ever since that day.

2012 here too and we do NOT have the air injection. Mine seems to be high speed idling with the colder temps and I do not remember it doing so last winter.
Also seems a bit louder until warm.

Anyone using a 5W20 rather than the 0W20 called for? I live in MD so we get 0* days and we get 100* + days. Just curious if the 5W20 made any difference in the way the engine runs. Seems like the 5W20 oil is also half the price of the 0W20 in terms of Toyota brand oil.

I notice a difference when using quality fuel from a top tier gas station like Mobil, but on occasion I buy from a non top tier gas station like Racetrack. I use only 87 octane.

Hey guys I’m pretty new around here.
I’ve been noticing what seems like to me is a weird rattling noise at startup when the engine is cold. And even when accelerating. It completely goes away once the engine warms up. I noticed some ticking but only when the engine is cold, once driving the sound goes away. I was thinking the recommended oil weight seemed kinda low 0 -20w ? Normally in my other engines I run 5-30w and 10-30w syn in summer

0w-20 is for CAFE. In other parts of the world our engines can use oils up to 20w-50 depending on expected temperatures.

I got hold of the 2015 Australia recommended oils page awhile back. Chart is actually for the FJ.

The Middle East is different still, sorry don't have the chart.
15w-40 down to -12C / 10F
10w-30 down to -18C / 0F
5w-30 for 10C / 50F or LESS

I am currently running 5w-30 with zero issues and will be trying some 5w-40 and 15w-40 down the road a bit.

I have a 2019 4Runner that makes most of the above mentioned sounds, especially when cold.
Years ago, I bought a new 1992 TOYOTA pickup with the inline 4. 22RE?
Started making a noise on startup, eventually threw a timing chain, just out of power train warranty of course. Toyota sprung for half the parts. Soured me on Toyota for awhile.
Bought my brothers 97 4R in 2007 with 100K miles. Daughter drives it now with about 220K on it and has been a good car.
If my 2019 ever has a problem like my 1992 had, I might dump some gas inside, drive it through the dealership front window and throw a match in it. LOL

Thanks for responding man. I really don’t mean to dig deeper into what you’ve already said. But the sounds I’m more so referring to is the rattle that comes around while revving. Which is a more district knock. You bring up a pretty good point about timing chain. So maybe it’ll be something I look into. I’m honestly at the point where I’ll just drive it and not care about the nosies LOOOL

Presumably this is a 'new to you' vehicle, make sure it has the correct grade oil in it, Synthetic 0W20 or 5W30. Maybe it has JiffyLube 10W30 in there? The valvetrain or rocker arms are loud on a cold start but normally not that loud:cheers:
