Engine /Transmission woefully outdated!

I love my 4runner, I’m on my second one, but I have to admit that the engine/transmission is starting to wear on me. Toyota has got to do something and do something in a hurry. It was a great power plant for its day but is so far behind the modern engines and transmissions, it’s almost laughable.

Just as one example....and there are many.....Ford’s little 2.7 liter eco boost turbo in the F-150 is rated at 325 hp and 400 lb. ft. It’s mated to a 10 speed auto in the 2018 model and can rip off sub 6 second 0-60 times while getting 20mpg city and 26mpg on the highway. Their larger 3.5 liter turbo is putting out 375hp and 470 lb. ft. !!!! And that engine is still getting 18mpg city and 25mpg highway.

Drive an F-150 and see the difference. It’s pretty amazing. And a 25% boost in highway mpg’s would be nice in case gas creeps back to $4 a gallon.

Well, I guess it's time to sell the 4Runner and get that F-150. This is a tired subject. It's either "old and reliability" or "new and advance." When a company can combine both AND make it affordable to the masses, you'll have a perfect vehicle. There is a reason why the 4Runner is still around. It ain't for EVERYONE but for us few. If you've made a mistake, something tells me you won't have any issue selling your current 4Runner.

I wonder what it costs to work on a 10-speed auto transmission?

Does it have paddle shifters too? :biggrin1:

Your post is useless, I think everyone (almost everyone) understood what they were getting themselves into when they purchased their 4Runner. If you feel like it's that bad then just install a super charger. The off-road capabilities and reliability are the predominant factors that many of us purchased the truck for. By the way the truck is comparable to other competitors in it's class when it comes to acceleration as many forum members have stated here time and time again. Go complain in a Ford forum you may get better responses.
 
It is amazing how outdated it is.... but why would you change when people keep paying for them and there is 0 competition in the segment.

I guess reliability goes a long way with most buyers.
 
Per Consumer Reports that f-150 is only beating the 4Runner 0-60 by 1sec.
I have no use for a pickup. Maybe when the Bronco comes out I'll look at that. But I'll probably just look at it.
The f-150 is a great truck but I'll take reliability over a few second drag difference on the highway.

Besides, I learned that the 4Runner will haul ass. You just gotta push that deep accelerator hard.

Way outdated. That's why we love it.

Reliable as an anvil. No direction injection to deal with. Still room to work on it. Read up on ecoboost turbo issues, overheating, going into limp mode, etc. All stuff I don't want to have to deal with.

The reason people knock on the 4.0l combo is because it's so reliable it is boring.

Those are some straight up lies about the mileage. You need to take a trip over to Fuelly.

I'm no Ecoboost hater, and I've even owned one. I was so incredibly close to buying another EB F-150 before I picked my new 4Runner, but the problems over at the F-150 forum compared to the problems over here is like night and day. Do I miss the power? Yeah sometimes, but everything else you gain with the 4Runner is worth it.

This vehicle should at the very least be updated with the Prado 150's 6-speed auto gearbox. There's no excuse for that omission.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers the flat-out lies about the fuel consumption.

OP, make sure you factor in the fuel economy of the loaner when it's getting repaired

Who buys a 4runner for speed?? Add all the extra HP/TQ and then you will have drivetrain issues. If you want something quick and with tons of power, go get a ZR2 with a diesel. Tune and delete it. You will have a capable offroad truck that will destroy most stock sports cars.

Me personally, I like the reliability of the 4runner platform, why change it if its a tried and true setup???

Maybe why they dropped the 3.5 liter 2GR-FKS + 6-speed in the new taco first?

I would have to ask my friend with a Prado 150 to see if he can pull that data to compare. However I've heard nothing to that effect anecdotally.
