Entune rant... It could be better...

I am a new 4Runner owner and I love the truck. The Entune system is such a let down. I know some auto manufactures lurk and even participate in online forums so I wanted to voice my opinion. My complaints are all pretty much functionality, would be easily fixed with a "update" I would think.

Rewind capability only available on am/fm. I am a Sat radio junkie, I love it. I have been a subscriber for 10+ years. Why can I rewind am/fm but not SiriusXM? I know they support it. Also, Artist/Song alerts.

Seek button via steering wheel controls only works "Categories". It should go up and down every channel instead for going up/down in the category of the channel you tune to. For example, I enjoy rap/hip hop, I program Fly (47). It is categorized as R&B, I like to browse the other hip hop channels but they are "Categorized" as Hip Hop and get skipped if I channel down from steerwheel controls.

That is the biggies that really bother me every time I use the system. Other than its 2018 and its a almost $50k vehicle and it doesnt have CarPlay :mmph:

Welcome to the forums. Just replace the head unit. That's what I did. Why let an ancient head unit ruin your day...

I honestly dont mind it. It looks great and functions well. The system I came from in my F150 was buggy, I had to "reset" it every few months.

I also prefer the OEM look. The new Alpine system looks beautiful but the city I live in theft would be a concern.

I think Entune works well, for what it can do. No CarPlay is a deal breaker for me, so I swapped it out. Toyota has finally started to listen to the market and is slowly rolling out CarPlay on their head units. No Android Auto yet that I'm aware of.

Pioneer hardware and Entune software is what OEM system is. I always had good luck with Pioneer, therefore no complains about head unit from me. USB, Mp3-CD, Radio, Satelite and apps such as Navigation is essentially sufficient.

I hear where the OP is coming from. I went through the trouble to get an OEM NAV and yes, it sucks. But, it's OEM. It's what I wanted. However, I'll eventually grow tired of it and replace it with an aftermarket one. Preferably one with a knob.

I'm feeling big and proud today because over a year ago when I bought mine I sorta looked like a fool insisting I get free lifetime entune nav updates with the purchase of my new vehicle. They thought I was nuts. Even tried to tell me updates were free...riiiiight. I made them write it down - "free lifetime nav updates". Well 15k miles later I waltz in that place and show them my email from toyota notifying me new update is available. How much is that update, I say? $169 dollar, sir. Not for me. Check the paperwork. They had to go all the way upstairs to some big wig to confirm that I was in fact was entitled to my free upgrade. SD card is ordered. Parts guy said no labor fee for the SD card updates.

I say all that to educate you future buyers out there. Get your free updates if you can. It's ridiculous in this day and age to offer integrated navigation and then try to charge 169 to update it. Apparently Toyota puts out a yearly update. That's $169 bucks a year.
I do like my entune Nav. It works. I use it in its simplest form, but it gets me where I need to go, and it has live traffic updates and such. Much easier/trouble free for me compared to using my phone. Probably be even sweeter if I learned how to use voice commands with it.

So if you want the integrated nav system, tell that salesperson to give you free updates. He'll do it to sell a car.

The Entune isn't exactly intuitive to use. I've had my 4runner for 3 years and finally made the effort to try Entune NAV for the first time on a road trip to Disney (after trying and getting frustrated when I first bought it) . It takes, for me at least, orders of magnitude longer to pull up a destination than on Google Maps on my iFon. Once you get the destination in though it navigates pretty good. I may have not been giving the proper voice command but I had no joy getting it to recognize anything I said. That Toyota wants to charge $169 for a software update is lousy but that's the dealer, not Toyota.

And I never really noticed but a few people commented that the screen is really small. Which is true compared to many cars that cost far less than my 2015 Trail. But those vehicles aren't body on frame, don't have 4wd or lockers, etc. Toyota has to cut corners somewhere on these things sadly else they would be even more expensive than they already are.
