Just heard from them after a week of calling, 22-26 week wait time now and they said to expect more towards the 26 weeks. I would totally go for a different rack if i know they wouldn't charge me the 500 dollar cancelation fee and if i could find a rack that doesn't require drilling, is full size and doesn't block the sunroof.

Does your channel cover what to do in situations like this, you know like when parts are on back order and you cant get in touch with the manufacturer?
Im not getting the rack for the looks or because someone else has it. The reviews are good from those that have owned one but i chose this rack because it ticks all the boxes i need. Full size, no drilling, sunroof not blocked. I dont really like the look of modular racks either, i had one on my previous SUV and i had a bad experience with it not holding up because the bolts holding it together failed in a few spots so i figured a rack that has less parts and is mostly one welded platform would be better.

Yes, JIT and Kanban are mostly used in a manufacturing environment like Gobi or most other manufacturing companies. The fact that their lead times are only 2-3 weeks longer due to "Covid" goes to show how bad their supply chain management was prior to Covid.

If you have their original lead time on an invoice or in some two-way communication, you can easily get out of the $500 cancellation fee. I can't even imagine a 50% cancellation fee as even being legal in this type of situation.
EDIT: worse case just cancel the credit card OR call the credit card issuer.

LOL that is total BS, maybe if your rack was the last one they were ever going to make. Pffft. Nothing final about selling a product with a 3 month lead time extended to a 6 month lead time.

Thats not a bad idea, all they have is a card number. Im holding off for 4 more weeks but if it doesent happen by then ill have to look for something else.

I have new set of wheels just waiting for my lift kit to come in and I already had to tackle Alpine Loop with my TRD PRO Bilstein setup (which worked fine but an extra 1.5" inch lift extra would have helped my confidence on some of the cliff-face and switchbacks).

Same here, my wife loved the looks, I loved the reviews.
Reading this thread makes me glad I built my 4runner the way I did. I spent 2 years prior to buying the 4runner getting all the parts together and paid for in cash. The Gobi rack took around 5 months, but when I took delivery of the 4runner I took it home to the garage and had suspension, wheels tires, front winch bumper, sliders, gobi rack, auxillary lighting, cb setup, ARB compressor, and traction boards all sitting in the garage ready to go and start installing from day one.
As I type this I realize I sound like I'm gloating, but having had other projects over the years I found that once you are making the payment your build plans keep getting pushed further and further back. People thought I was crazy having that much money tied up in a vehicle I had not even bought but having done several off road vehicles in the past I knew exactly what I needed and what I didn't and being able to enjoy the 4runner from day one fully built was worth the 2 years of parts buying.
That was off topic but love my Gobi, not sure I would wait 5 months if I was driving the 4runner when I ordered it.

Gobi had extended lead times even before the pandemic and all this supply chain turmoil we are experiencing isn’t helping.
I work in industries that buy metals for use in fabrication… not only have we seen significant price increases, availability is also very poor, and demand has not let off.
What you are hearing and experiencing is normal, but combined with Gobi’s already poor delivery performance, you will likely be waiting much longer than you anticipated.
The main problem is… unless its in stock and ready to ship, all manufacturers and vendors are in the exact same position.

Most companies don't handle it as poorly as Gobi.
I've had...
-a custom rear tire carrier, full set of skids (bought in a group buy), & sliders (bought back to back)
-a complete suspension systems produced and shipped from Australia
-an entire excursion trailer custom built
...in less time than Gobi can make a rack.
All of this during the pandemic, with strains on supply chains, with increasing prices, etc. Gobi's business plan and management is just crap and that's why I started looking elsewhere for a roof rack (even though I really like the style of their Stealth basket).

Gobi reminds me of many years ago there was a custom bumper “company” in Atlanta called Kennesaw Mountain Accessories, which “dissolved” but immediately resurfaced as a company called the “Tactical Armor Group”. Purportedly some people actually received their orders, but many of us had not, several forum threads across multiple forums reflect this.

That is usually a risk when paying for promises instead of goods… especially if you are dealing with startups or people who have not been in business for a significant amount of time.
I usually never participate in a Kickstarter, or even a pre-order unless the vendor has been around for decades. Often times these young outfits are using this tactic to generate interest free funding to move a business plan forward.

It's not just the "Gobi's" of the world. The shop at work has 2 Mack Front Loader Trash trucks just sitting because the parts they need are on "intergalactic backorder" with no ETA available.
These are both 2020 trucks at about $350000 each...and both still under warranty. :suspicious:

Since last year body parts for current model year vehicles have been practically nonexistent, 5-6 months on backorder.

I've been waiting since the middle of July for an High pressure AC line for my 2016. They are still building these cars, I'm not sure why it takes over a month to get an AC line to the dealer. Before that, the dealer said there was a 5000 part backlog for front rotors, but that was mid-COVID. I'm not sure what the excuse is now.
