Exhaust/Resonator question

Hi all,
I have been finding a LOT of mixed reviews from older posts on adding a resonator to the exhaust so figured I would ask a few questions and maybe get some more up to date answers. This is for the v8 so I figured I would get better results here than in the exhaust section since our gens are the only v8's.

My stock exhaust flange and some pipe was rusted and broken so I went to the local shop to get it replaced and inquire about adding a slightly throatier muffler that doesn't have the droan most complain about. They recommended a turbo muffler, specifically a Xlerator Big Max. They put the muffler in and replaced the bad pipe/flange. Picked it up and it sounds great. Exactly what I wanted but the RPM range that the truck runs on the highway is just to loud for what I want at cruising speed for our 8+ hour trips to the mountains. I wouldn't say it "droans" and its not a bad sound, its just a constant louder tone that doesn't change the entire time your at those speeds and I don't want to listen to it. Around town it is awesome and really makes it sound like a truck.

The shop recommends adding a resonator and says it "should" make it quieter but looking on here it seems as though there are mixed results with this. I don't want to waste the money on a resonator only to be disappointed with the results. So, Do you all think it is worth having the resonator added in for and extra $40? They are cutting me a bit of a deal since I wasn't satisfied.

Will it actually help or should I order the walker quietflow and tail pipe set then try to sell the exhaust that is on there now? I'm leaning toward the quietflow and trying to sell what I have to get back a little bit of my $$.

Would anyone in the northeast Florida area be interested in the exhaust I have for say $100? It is basically a catback system with a side exit and stainless tip.

I guess to simplify my ramblings is it worth adding a resonator to a louder muffler or is it a waste of money and effort? Will the resonator make the etire system quieter or will it just reduce or get rid of the drone on the highway?

i don't have a TON of experience with this but ill try to help you out, even though my answer may not be what you want to hear. i had a friend who added a resonator to his loud exhaust hoping it would quiet it down. it did get rid of a bunch of drone but it didn't make it quieter.

the best way id have to guess if a resonator would help you out is that some on here have taken off their resonator and said that there was absolutely no change in the sound. id probably take the route of a different muffler, tons of people love the flowmaster 50 suv, aggressive but not excessive.
 
Thanks, Kindda what I was figuring. This muffler is probably some what comparable to the 50 series. It's a turbo muffler so it's not a straight through design like a magnaflow or dynomax but it still has a very throaty sound and that little roar to it.
 
This is from a Jeep forum that I used to frequent. I tried this with my 2004 WJ with a Magnaflow muffler and it worked really well once I got the length dialed in. It still had the nice sound from the muffler but completely got rid of the drone around 2200 rpm.

The guys at the exhaust shop thought I was crazy and suggested adding a resonator instead.
 
I run the 50 series, most of the time I can barely hear it. Oh wait, I can barely hear anyway.... Seriously, I don't notice it much though.
Side note, I was really close to trying to buy yours when it was for sale since I have relatives down there. Nice truck.

Very interesting.... I see he is running that with a quiet-flow muffler those jeeps must drone like crazy. I had an 04 Dakota with the 4.7 and ravin z33 exhaust but I was 10 years younger with no wife or child and the drone didn't bother me lol.

After looking at other options most of the day yesterday I think I've decided to go for the walker quiet-flow ss with a new tail pipe as well, basically a cat back system. I will try to post a video clip of the xlerator so you guys can here it. It really is a good sounding muffler.

Thanks, My wife decided to go with a Camry instead of a 4Runner for fuel purposes and we found a smoking deal on a 2011 Camry SE so I pulled the post. I will eventually go for either a Tundra or F-150 but for now we have a house to build before March so a truck will have to wait.

It sure is too bad that the engineers that designed that exhaust didn't take this sort of thing into account.

Oh wait they did.

Not sure if your trying to be a smart ass or what? If not then carry on.

If you are then please move on with your life as you have nothing constructive to add and no one loves you.

Aside from that its not like I hacked up a perfectly good exhaust for a louder muffler only to complain about it. It was rusted out, needed to be replaced and I took the advice of the muffler shop when they said the turbo muffler would sound good without having the drone.
 
I don't know about aftermarket resonators, but I removed (well actually it was a Honda Civic) my OE resonator and noticed zero difference.
 
Found a. Buyer for my currant exhaust and Decided to just go with the quiet-flow muffler and tail pipe. Should have it swapped out this weekend.
 
Yeah so my new walker quiet flow exhaust was delivered today and let's just say I'm less than impressed with the shipment standards.

This is literally how it was delivered to me.

Tiny bit of bubble wrap on the ends and 184 paper stickers plastered directly to the piping that only gets a few hundred degrees.

At least the muffler didn't get damaged due to the lack of any sort of packaging on it, oh wait

Well the one layer of bubble wrap securely affixed to the ends provided some protection right? **** no, why would it!
