Expedition & Camping bags

Fishing around for some reviews of Expedition type bags, something that is sturdy, has good/useful compartments and can fit quite a bit.

Only one I have come across is one made by Redoxx, the one I have particularly took a liking to is a Flying Boxcar

Does anyone else have experience with this product?

What has been your experience with other expedition bags?

This is what we use:

NRS 3.8 Bill's Bag Dry Bag at nrs.com

They are our dry bags for rafting. I could fit in one. We use them for tents, stove, clothes, sleeping bags, lantern, etc, etc. Essentially everything except electronics and sleeping pads, which are waterproof.

I love these bags because you can throw them on your roof, trailer, or boat and they are ready to go. You can carry them like a backpack and with all the straps they are easy to lash down.

This doesn't organize your gear the way your bag does but it holds a ton and is waterproof.

Edit: I should also say that we love our Patagonia Black Hole bags. These are smaller than the Bills Bags and are not waterproof, so weather is an issue with them, but I have seen pics. of them strapped to yaks on their way to Everest base camp so I know that a lot of other folks who put gear through its paces believe in them. They can also be worn as backpacks.

I like Patagonia's Black Hole (water resistant) duffles for general use, and Skully's waterproof duffles as well.

Both are bombproof, just a matter of whether you need water-resistant, or proof.
Patagonia's can also back into itself when not in use--very compact and stashable--even their 110L's.
 
I think more importantly, you need to determine what you want to bring with you:
1. Daily
  • a. recovery
  • b. first aid
  • c. tools
2. Camping
  • one day,
  • multiple days,
3. Location

If you already know what those bags will consist of, then you'll have an idea of how to size up the bags. You may want a system of bags where you can utilize a larger one to hold a bunch of smaller ones that you can cater to your adventure. Whether that means going on a picnic for a couple of hours or a 7 day multi-state tour.
 
My main gear is stored in NRS Canyon boxes, after that it's a combination of black hole duffles, some dry bags, and potentially a large (60+L) pack or two.

very tough and durable
used by many people in military
or who travel overseas it areas where conditions are rough
I own over a dozen of their items
their bag selection is very wide ranging

I second this ^^^ I own multiple Maxpedition bags. Extremely high quality, they have a huge slection, a great warranty, and offer multiple bags that tie in some sort of conceal carry - if that is your type thing.

Otherwise, a huge selection of daily, first aid, travel, duffel, etc bags.

I too like maxpedition bags, but I have also had great success with the 5.11 MOAB series for daily carry.

My major travel bags are Filson, but I will say, after reading this post, I now know about Red Oxx and their stuff looks great.

Update:

I purchased a Red Oxx bag for traveling and I can say these bags are great and well made. In fact, I am not going to buy Filson anymore and go with this brand. I needed a bag for three days of clothing for carry on and the Sunchasser bag by RO is perfect. I am now looking for one to keep gear in the 4Runner and tools.

The are not the cheapest for load out gear, but are well made.

3 votes for The North Face. All of mine work flawlessly and one is a constant traveler on the airlines.

I just read an article on Outside online and the editor pick was The North Face

Why don't you like the new update? From what Ive seen it just adds a separate zip compartment on one of the ends.... Are there other changes?

I don't like that aux pocket on the side. Also, I like full-size handles, not the small grab handles on each side. I also liked how the older design had more daisy chain loops. Finally, and this is the big one, the shoulder straps on the old design are sewn onto the body of the bag and reinforced with cross-stitching. In the new design the shoulder straps are simply sewn into the seam of the bag.

Also, at least with the small bag, there are no carry handles like on the old styles, just the shoulder straps. I find it a little annoying, but the quality is still there.
