Ok I am now pretty tired of trying to figure out whats going on

the problem is that my truck being MANUAL sometimes I hear a clicking or clunking sound shifting gears etc, today I looked under and check all the u joints etc and turned the driveshafts by hand no play in the joints however there is play in the actual shaft coming out of the transfer case, is that normal for manual 4runners? I can rotate it about 1 inch from left to right and back and forth. ALSO just yesterday I noticed I got a vibration under acceleration at about 65mph and its worse when its under load, and it feels like its coming from the driveshaft, trans, tcase etc

can someone with a manual 4wd 4runner go out and see if they can rotate their driveshaft and back forth a bit or its really tight??

i can't fully help you (auto trans) but there should be "some" play in that joint as when in 2wd it's not engaged and even when it is in 4x4 there is still a bit of play in there....oh yeah and that sig line is annoying....;):

The play is normal. The vibration, I can almost guarantee, is from the rear most u-joint.

Also, I have an extra set of Tundra TRD springs. Still have those SR5 flares?

Very common to have vibe from the u joints. I would try lubing all the zerks heavily with grease. Rule of thumb is to grease until you hear the crackle . I usually go a bit more. Easy to do and if that doesn't fix it then look elsewhere.

Pitbull: No those flares are sold I have a brand new set of bushwaker flares that are 12 pieces and all the hardware even the gasket kits they sell I was going to install them but I dont like how if I do my wheels wont look like they stick out and I already have spacers so I am prob going to sell them, lmk if your interested and ok I will swap out the u-joint and see if you hit it in the head lol.

ok so for now I will leave the trans case alone lol

sorry for the sig line hahah ill change it now.:roadkill:

I'd try greasing the hell out of it first. I had a ton of play and noise and vibe ... grease fixed it and its been over a year of smooth sailing !!

will try that first thing tom morning, is it possible that im getting this because I just lifted my truck 1 week ago and I know the rear of the driveshaft got extended about 1 1/2 inch so there is not enough grease in it now?

More than likely, you need a u-joint. If it's now happening after the lift, the u-joint was more or less use to being at a certain angle. Now that it's lifted a u-joint that was already on it's way out is now more stressed and acting up at the steeper angle. $25 at NAPA and not a terrible DIY but most shops will also do OT for next to nothing if you drop the driveshaft and bring it to them to press the old out and new in.

I dont think I will run into any problems with the shaft guys I used to be a bmw tech for 4 years and ive never had to take anything to anyone OTHER then a auto trans, I just dont touch those.

I will probably just replace all 5 u joints this weekend.

Up to you but I'd start with just the rear most one. The ones in the cardain (sp?) joint don't go bad often. And they're a b*tch to replace.

On a side note, glad to know you're well versed in BMW's, I'm a bit of a BMW nut myself. But I just sold my last one a few months ago, 540i/6. I didn't really drive it anymore and needed the room.

yeah I just like to have it all clean and done with. Over the last few months ive spend about 5k in just parts on this truck, ill post a build thread soon.

540/6 is a fantastic bmw, I consider them one of the last few true and true bmws being the E39s. Ive had a few e39 M5s and I can honestly say id take a 540/6 over the M5, wayy more bang for your buck and less expensive to work on.

Here is a pic of the last 540/6 I had, it was SC and regeared, I had it up to 190 a few times and it felt like butter, the e30 m3 in the back is mine also, thats the day I bought it (Most succesful car in racing history, something over 1600 championships etc).

if you dont want to have to do them again soon, use TOYOTA u-joints. they are far superior to anything you can buy from a parts store.

but, im with whoever said to just grease them, and dont replace them unless, theyre bad. the ones in the DC joint are likely just fine.
