Extreme inside windshield condensation

Our new 2019 TRD ORP is getting very extreme inside windshield condensation when parked overnight, it rains, then gets colder.

It is so much moisture that it has even had drops coalesce and run down the inside of the windshield

Never have it when it hasn't rained recently.

Odd thing is it is ONLY on the windsheld, no other windows have any at all!
Seems that lets out wet carpet etc.
Coolant isn't dropping so seems it isn't a heater core leak.

Ideas?

You probably have a leak somewhere (plugged sun roof drain maybe). My other car has a leak in the trunk that I can’t locate and it does the same thing. Look for any wet spots after a nice rain storm.
In the mean time get a couple small containers of Damprid to help capture all that moisture.

do you run the front defroster or heater before getting out of the car? If so, that would probably cause that in such humid weather.

Actually it hasn't been driven in several weeks.

I just checked the cabin filter also- dry.

I think the moisture may be rising out of the defrost vents- that may explain why it is only the windshield.

I've felt everywhere I can reach and feel no moisture.

The sun roof has only been open for maybe 1 min once to verify it worked- don't really use it, didn't want it.

Good point though- Off to find and check the drains anyway....

My 2016 did this same wet windshield thing for the first time a few weeks ago and two streaks of water ran down on the inside. I am afraid it could be leaking sunroof but no other indication such as head liner carpet totally dry and things like that.

I need to look into these drain holes but have been lazy.

Other than a leak, the only other thing I can think of is that when you let it sit, the vents are in "open" mode and not set to recycle. That would let outside air blow in through the front vents if the wind blows.

Yes This is what happened to me and it went away as soon as I set the recycle vent

Went out and hit recirc and heard something move so maybe that's the fix.

Hard to believe that Toyota didn't make the HVAC intakes shut on their own at vehicle shutdown to prevent the fogging issue if that is what's happening. SMH

I had lots of condensation for a short while. I often have a lot of wet fishing gear in the back for several hours, and my weathertech mats hold a lot of melted snow. In my case, it didn't appear to be anything other than moisture that I brought in with my boots and my gear.

I finally said "screw this" and put the dehumidifier in the cargo area with an extension cord running from the house. I left it overnight, and it got rid of the moisture.

But was the condensation only on the windshield? That is what was odd to me.

Make sure all your windows and sunroof are closed.

If so, you have a leak.

I leave it out in the Bay moisture for 2-3 weeks at a time and it's dry in there.

4th gens had well known issue with the firewall leaking on the drivers side. Water would run down the firewall then underneath the dead pedal and water would pool under the floor mats and carpet. Mine did this. But I have not heard that 5th gens have the same problem yet.


When my 4th gen leaked it added enough internal moisture to cause condensation like you described, on the front wind shield and sun roof.

If you don't have any leaks then make sure you run your AC with heat to dry out the interior, turn off that recirculate button.

UPDATE- after testing for a few weeks the overnight windshield condensation is indeed alleviated by making sure the climate control knob is placed in recirc before shutting down.
Never had a vehicle before that had this issue, including at least 6 Toyotas- but at least there is a workaround.
