Extremely low gas mileage

5 miles in winter Toronto? The oil and trans fluid don't get anywhere near operating temp in that time. 12 mpg is doing well in that situation.

HAH, thanks for the laugh. On the -13F (-25c) mornings, I have to intentionally take the long way out of the neighbourhood, on a quieter street, chugging along in 1st gear at 15mph for a few minutes before it even engages second gear.
Heat comes on quick though, and I just bought a 10$ heated pad.

Gotta take the good with the bad. I honestly thought I was being a wise ass by undersizing to the pizza cutter size. They were not easy to find either used.

Interesting. Mine won't shift into 3rd until my ECT gets to 130 degrees. It should shift into 2nd for you below that...

Interesting to see this thread still going, I typically averaged 16-17mpg on my 2001 4runner v6/4WD Auto (Cali)

The Fuel Light comes on when there is about 2 Gallons left and the lowest I've ever managed to get it (I was playing fuel chicken for real) was a fill of 17.6Gallons. On that particular journey it was something like 21.7mpg but that was almost all highway with very little slowdown.

Absolutely. Any leak after the MAF causes "lean" feedback from O2 sensor, and the computer will adjust long term fuel trim to save the engine - it's not perfect. My 5vzfe had mileage drop hard after 22 years of ownership: I found LT fuel trim parked around 11% consistently [near idle], and the number would taper down as rpm went up. Replaced the formed elbow hose at PCV, and 4 other hoses that connected arond the manifold area [including EGR control], and trim returned to a sane number near or under 1%. Little tiny cracks are enough to cause problems.

No. Only the early T100 and very early Tacomas (I think) have EGR.
