F Performance!

Is it me, or is there some tongue-in-cheek snickering going on at Lexus these days?

I was poking around their site a few months ago when I was looking for a new daily driver and I noticed the "F Performance" category. I just saw it again today and it made me laugh.

Like other double-entendres I see coming from companies, I have to believe that *someone* noticed this and decided to roll with it.

Anyway, I'm with you, Lexus. F performance! It's overrated anyway. =p

However, I wouldn't say no if someone gave me one! I'd probably just sell it and get something else though. Har har.

They are a bit of a joke in terms of what you can get for other vehicles of the same price, especially with the latest releases. The RC-F/GS-F are super overweight and don't really compete with other vehicles at the same price range. A CTS-V would totally annihilate a GS-F which has the same engine as the RC-F and is just a slightly modified IS-F engine.

It doesn't help they released the F Sport line which further muddied the water, but BMW does have the M package for their non-M vehicles so it's along the same line.

I must say though, as an IS-F owner, the car is bullet proof and you run your risks with other vehicles who are more powerful or decide to put more emphasis in other areas. So, pick your poison. :beer:

I have a 2015 IS 350 F-Sport and love it. It may not be the fastest car around but it's reliability is great. I had a BMW 335 before the Lexus and at 50,000 miles the turbos needed work and it cost an arm and a leg to maintain after the warranty.

When I was in the market for a new fast daily driver, I learned a lot about the F-Sport IS's and what not. It sounds like they've come a long way, but have a little ways to go still.

That said, I certainly wouldn't say no to one!

You have to remember that Lexus F-Line is still a far cry from any previous performance offerings so for Lexus its definitely a step in the right direction of performance although they may pale in comparison to other luxury performance offerings.

The Lexus cars are still going to have a certain level of refinement. I'm sure if they really wanted to, they could do what Nissan did and retro-fit a 5.x liter truck V8 into a sedan but that's not what they're about.

Beginning with the new LC, we are about to see a very different type of F car. As Midnight Anvil noted, the last few years have been a growth period and I think we're about to see some really great products come out over the next few years. Rumor is that the next generation "F" powerplant is a twin turbo V8 with 600+ HP.

GS F is a good car for what it is. Underpowered, yes, but a great car none the less. Consider that the M5 and E63 are generally 100-125k, and 85k for 467hp seems fair. GS F is also a good bit lighter than either. CTS-V is on another level... though GM is having a real problem keeping that engine from overheating.

RC F is bloated, heavy and the chassis is a joke.

LFA and IS F were both great cars.

Jeremy Clarkson has reviewed the Lexus GS F for The Sunday Times, and it’s certainly a fun read for Lexus enthusiasts:

I especially liked the noise. In the mid-ranges — up to, say, 4500rpm — it sounds baleful and hollow, like a lonely wolf. But if you keep your foot planted in the carpet and go up past 6000rpm, it starts to sound as though it’s angry about being a hollow wolf. It sounds — and this is the highest praise you can lavish on any car — like a Ferrari 458 Italia.

This is the best Lexus I’ve driven since the LFA, which is also riddled with annoying details, but remains my all-time favorite car.

I wouldn’t blame you at all if you went off and bought a BMW M3 or M5 instead. They’re both tremendous. But don’t assume they’re the best of breed. Because in my book this flawed old-school charmer has them beat.

Exactly. They are doing exactly what Cadillac did with their V-series. While not the overall BEST vehicle in the comparable market. They make a great looking, better performing vehicle, for people in that niche or brand loyal from a luxury brand with more performance than the normal model. Is it a Merc or a BMW by no means. But they are a great improvement and direction for the companies.
