Factory manuals

Does anyone have a suggestion for a maintenance manual for an 03 4Runner? The factory manuals are kind of expensive. And in looking through them, they are not what I expected.

What was wrong with the factory manuals?

If you want a cheaper alternative, try the Haynes or Chilton manuals, but they aren't really that good. Cheap, though.

I do not like the FSM. I spent over $ 200 on them. The lay-out is poor. It takes forever to look things up. It just does not flow as well as other FSMs. It also does not describe how things work, much. Don

To me, and I've tried both, the FSM is my choice. But they are pricey.

I downloaded everything for my truck (complete FSM, auto transmission repair manual, wiring diagrams, some tech info books on brakes, noise and vibration etc..., all the TSB's that came out for my truck, etc...)

It took approximately 4 to 5 hours to get everything. You have to open each file seperately (pdf), then click "save as" to save them to you computer (I got approx 1400 different files). It took me long, because I re-named the files as I saved them so that they would make sense (the naming convention they used seemed random to me), then, I spent a few hours putting an excel spreadsheet together as an index for the FSM with clickable hyperlinks to each file.

BTW guys, does the 06 have it's own FSM or does it still share the 03 manual?

There is a 2006 version of the manual, but there are quite a few pages that say 2003, 2004, or 2005 on them for things that haven't changed since that model year.

I agree that the Toyota FSM's dont seem to be well written and can be hard to follow sometimes. And the paper versions are VERY expensive. (Honda's are under $100 complete, whereas Toyota can be over $300 with all of the sections.) Nonetheless, it is the most complete reference out there. I've got the Haynes manual for a 2000 Tacoma, but it's pretty general. I've had to go back to TIS for more specifics.
