I did with my '06. As long as you follow what the brochure or Toyota.com says, you can order with or without the options you desire. You can't order something that is not available for that trim or ask for a color that's not offered, i.e. Blizzard Pearl on a Trail.
However, if an option you're looking for has a prerequisite then you must meet that as well. So like if you want leather 3rd row seats on the SR5, you have to have the Premium Package as well.
I waited about three months to get exactly what I wanted from the time I told my sales my rep to delivery. It was about two months once we found out the factory accepted the build to delivery.
When you punch in your zip code into Toyota.com, it shows you what your regional distributor has ordered for your area. The regional distributor orders what they believe will sell in your market area and it may or may not have the options you want.

Salsa Red is only available on the SR5 and the Trail. Just like Shoreline Blue is only available on LTD and Trail or else i would have the blue on my SR5.

I had to factory order my TE..took awhile to get..8+ weeks...I really wanted the KDSS without NAV...but they couldn't find one...but when I ordered it the dealer said I had to get it with the NAV...I insisted that it came configured without it...but his and his boss's response after a few emails and phone calls to Japan later was that is wasn't available on the east coast in that configuration! Oh well...so I got it fully loaded...if you ask me they should engrave your name in the dash that says "Built for ....."

Thanks for the responses guys. The reason I was questioning the Salsa red in the limited is because on the 2011 brochure, the 2nd page shows a limited in salsa red. If that's the case and it isn't offered in red i'm leaning towards blue or grey. I guess I need to do a pro's and con's about colors :artist2:

I bought mine from my borther's friend and he has a mag gray LTD and its a very nice color, especially with the solid black interior. I almost changed my mind from black to gray myself. As far as the blue, I don't see very many on the roads. Mostly around my area I see BP, black, silver and mag gray. If it wasn't for the $ difference, I would be driving a Shoreline Blue LTD with the tan interior.

I have towed it about 1/4 mile but that was just to get a feel for it behind the 4runner. I Haven't hooked it up and actually towed with it because of the factory plug location. I do plan on towing it ocassionally though once I get an extension for the trailer harness and it ever stops raining long enough to ride.
I had an 800 max and traded it in on a Honda Big Red last summer. I then traded my Dad the Honda for the Rhino (which only has about 225 miles and is an '07 - still new practically). I like the Rhino but I miss that 800 Rotax engine - a lot!! I loved that Bombardier.
I am going to throw a wrench into this thread. It is my understanding that one could NOT order a specific vehicle from Toyota......what happens is that you place your "preference" and a distributer (if your in an area that uses a distributer like here in Florida) will find a vehicle close to your desire that is already at the port or on the way from Japan, often times adding or subtracting certain options when it gets here, then sends it to the dealer as close as possible to the customers wishes, hoping the customer then follow through with the purchase.
The distributer can change/add some options, but not others. So the vehicle presented to you may be 80% or more with the things you want, but maybe not exact. I was told all this by a dealer and it seems to be true considering all I have read in this forum. The factory just does not have time to do custom orders.

So when ordering a built to my spec or dealer pref, what kind of price should i pay vs msrp.
all i want is SR5 4x4 with one front and rear 120v + the factory crossbars.
MSRP is $32,705 - what should i pay? will i get the same, better, or worse pricing on a "built to order/dealer pref"?

well...there are 2 4Runners sitting on the lot at the dealership a mile away from me in NJ!! they look like SR5's..
My sales guy pulled out this little book with all the options that you can get on a 4Runner. They were all codes. If the options or configurations didn't have a code..ie: KDSS w/o NAV..then your out of luck...He also said it depends on what region you live in...I was skeptical at first but he was really honest with me and he did try his best to accommodate everything I asked.
As for price..I knew I couldn't get a great deal since I was basically my own salesperson in the deal. It's not like it was on the lot and they were trying to sell it!! But I was able to get them to knock off a few grand off. A fully loaded TE goes for just under 41K. And I was able to get it for 39k with all of those extras like paint film protection, wheel and tire plan, lost key replacement, etc...
Either way..I'm happy and satisfied!!

i know this is an old thread, but i have to throw in my two cents here - i found trying to order a toyota horrible experience. I built my toyota TE per the specs, with KDSS. I priced it on true car and got dealer quotes for it, but when they realized it was not a car they are sending readily to the east coast (which i don't understand (silver TE premium with KDSS) ) it was a nightmare. My local dealer claimed to order one from Japan, to my specs but then said - well if toyota approves it , which they supposedly did, then 6 weeks later it was supposedly on the ship with less options than i supposedly ordered and for more money. Most dealers hem and haw when they find out they have to special order it. I went thru many dealers to finally find the one car that came in to my specs and bought the car from his inventory . My lesson learned is that you can't special order a toyota from the factory - you take what you can get from local inventory that matches your preferences or hope a dealer can redirect one from the manifest of other dealers.
I love my toyota but I wish they could be more accommodating. my nephew just bought a jeep, factory ordered to his specs and it came with his name on the sticker (built specially for """) you think toyota could make its customers feel a little more special in that respect. If i didn't want the 4Runner so bad I would have switched to an american car.

in Toyota speak its "allocation" or as some of you call preference.
if you are lucky enough you can actually see the new car GM screen that you pick and choose what your dealer wants for allocation and there is no timeline for when these allocations are fulfilled. once you select and submit an allocation request, it is either accepted or rejected by Toyota a few days later.
color/options/model. different sets get different dealer number allocations (NB-LE was 1 and silver-LE was 2) and you pick and choose check boxes on what you want your region to send to you from Toyota japan.
you really cant order directly. I was lucky enough last year to use the actual allocation system and pick what options, color, model.
I even picked the 1st and 2nd allocation choices for my dealer.
silver LE with only the option in my sig. my 2nd choice was a NB in the same choice. and what you see on the website based on your region is what you cant check box in the allocation screen.
now I know another member in the forums picked his up the same night as me, but his wait was a lot shorter since they did a dealer trade.
my very unique option list made it impossible to find a dealer trade since most either had a sliding tray, 3rd row or auto running boards. so I had to wait until Toyota actually built my specific combo then allocate it to my dealer.
do not take my situation as normal as I have bought 10+ Toyota's from this dealer and I am very good friends with new car GM (due to the # of Toyota's bought from them) so I have a atypical relationship that you probably will not receive from your dealer.

This was an interesting post I can relate to. I just ordered a 2016 4Runner Silver LE. It was an ordeal till I found the RIGHT dealer. I had my paperwork in my hand . I knew I was in the right . I was no going to buy a vehicle I could not use. So I walked out of a few small local dealerships.
We had a SPECIAL need of certain options . We required and needed every inch of space in the rear cargo area could afford. This meant NO third row seat an NO cargo tray. We looked at a SR5 equipped like this, perfect for the room. But the model was ALL wrong ....we needed a LE.
But , when we asked for a LE model. Told it was impossible. So I pointed out , it was listed clearly in the brochure both 3 rd row and tray were optional. No requirements. I had studied it for months , worked it online , no problem. It was in black and white possible ....so I pointed out was this false advertising ? The dealers had no answer. They did not like the questions I asked. Forcing me to buy something that is listed as optional clearly ...is not a friendly way to do business. Maybe not legal .
I was willing to wait to get what I NEEDED, pay the price and small down payment. Sales people are a pain....they want the sale now worried about their commission , not if your getting the vehicle you NEED.
So.......I figured I needed to go to dealer , a huge one with corporate pull. By pass the sales dept and their lies and stonewalling. Talked to the CEO....he grabbed the sales mgmt ...had him take the order and call it in.
Bingo.....after explaining we wanted a Silver LE with no tray or third row and why. In 25 minutes the order was written up, approved at the port , down payment accepted.
So go to dealer that sells huge volumes an is use to meeting special requests and ordering from Toyota Japan. After a few moments of listening , they agreed there were no trucks in the USA built like this and a special order was needed. They were happy to sell us a truck .
I knew it could be done , as I went though this buying a Lexus for my wife. I was stoned walled. Till I call the the head officer or Lexus sales. About four weeks latter the exact car we wanted showed up
Got to be persistent and find the person who can made the deal happen.
