Yesterday i finished up the paperwork on a 2008 black sr5 with 3rd row!! I got it for 15700 with 94k miles which in Maryland is a pretty decent deal for the condition its in. I'll had some pictures soon as this is probably going to turn into my build/adventure thread over the years. I'm going for a clean look on it, so here are my plans and I'll update things as i go!

Wheels: TRD pro in gloss black (OEM not FN wheels)
Tires: Either 265/75R17 or 275/70R17 Most likely going to be Falken Widepeak

Suspension: Bilstein 5100 all around set to .85 or 1.75 in the front to level the car out. I'm also thinking a lot about going with an OME suspension but I'm not sure yet if i want a lift.

Lighting: LED's in interior and eventually some fancy exterior lighting but that's not a priority yet

Roof Rack: I'm still debating on roof racks and I'd like some input on this. I kayak fish so I have a giant 12 foot kayak and i also surf so i have a giant 9ft surfboard so i want something stylish but something that can easily carry those items. Its possible i may even just stay stock. Not looking to spend a bunch on a rack.

Body: I don't plan on adding any armor besides things underneath like skid plates. I do although plan on getting rid of all of the chrome (front grill, rear 4runner panel, door handles)

Recovery gear: Simply going to get some onboard air, quick deflator, maxxtrax, jack and wood(for beach), shovel (recommend me some good ones!), and some good straps

Obviously I'm going pretty moderate with my build, but that's what I want. I'm the type that likes a good clean OEM look in a sense (I'd buy a TRD Pro if i had the money!) I'm going to add some pictures soon of it stock and if you guys have any input on anything of what I should be aware of or do better if you know what I mean, please let me know! Approaching 10 years old and < 100k miles, I'd say you did great. 3rd row will be nice if you have kids/carseats/etc.

V6 or V8? Either way they are a lot of fun to drive even if stock, the reality of my budget. Not to rain on your new 4Runner, but how is the frame rust? I've heard the radiator support is a good place to start looking. On 3rd gen passenger side near the muffler is a common place on that one, though the one I checked, 1998, was good there but driver's side behind the front wheel corroded through and they wanted $6,300, that was a not. Although assuming your doing your own work you'll also be fighting the rust.

What I did on 2005 Matrix that I am not going to do any extensive repairs was spray the lower control arms and other rusty areas with Liquid Wrench lubricant, the blue can, to slow it down. Then next summer I can look into it more, but this one is my winter beater so I only plan to see 3 to 6 more years out of it.

And did you get the chance to run the VIN through Toyota.com to look at the service records? I bought my 2005 V6 with 294k on it but was able to check the service records on vehiclehistory.com and mycarfax.com(sign up for free account) and see the previous owner was servicing every ~5k and it was out of New Mexico, so at $2k I was the new owner within an hour, the dealership wholesale'd it, and I was probably the lucky first upon the deal.

But depending on V6 or V8 you'll want to know what servicing needs to be updated, and in your case if any. Also check around where all the seals are for leaks, though I'm not sure in your case but seals could dry out if the vehicle had been sitting for a long time.

Congratulations, your now the new owner of one of the top best built automobiles in the world. (That also why my screen name, Squire (Fender) made a 'Supersonic' model guitar in Japan too.)

Thanks for all the info!! I did check for rust and there is some in normal spots but nothing serious. I do have a warranty tho for 50k miles so honestly I think I might be able to get a new frame if I ever need it but from what I've read the 2008 4runners didn't have issues to were the whole thing rots away. And also btw it's a v6
I did also run service records, it was owner by a local guy for its first 70, all service done regularly and then owned by a salesman that worked there. He wasn't the one who sold me on it although haha I found that out later. He had a warranty also and replaced the full exhaust and starter and also had maintenance records.
Overall so far the car seems solid and I have lots of piece of mind that I have a nice Toyota warranty so I'm a happy camper right now!

With a 50,000 mile warranty I think you're golden!!

Be sure to take full advantage of that warranty for even the littlest things, warranties like that don't come along very often for a 9 to 10 year old vehicle!!

I don't know for sure, but I would venture to say yes it would since you would be altering the stock configuration, to make sure I would ask at the dealership you purchased it from, if say they no it wouldn't I would get that in writing!

nice. I just picked up an 07 SR5, v6, 77k, Shadow Mica yesterday for 11k. Had a 99 that was totaled with 430k miles. My frame had minimal surface rust, nothing crazy but will be addressed in the spring. Swapping all fluids next weekend.

From my understanding it would likely void your warranty for any suspension related issues. Supposedly the law says that it needs to be proved that your lift was the reason for the failure, but if you run into a suspension related issue they may just blame it on it. But, if your AC fails, they shouldn't be able to void your warranty for that repair. Unless, say, your shock blows off your car and spears your AC condenser, lol.
