FIPG or paper gasket for rear main retainer?

I did some searching and found a couple of threads where people were recommending FIPG on the rear main seal retainer and some saying just go with the paper gasket.

I just got my 22re short block back for my pickup. I noticed when i took it out it had grey rtv. The machine shop just installed the paper gasket with no rtv. The gasket is from an ITM kit they bought. What would you guys do? Take out the paper and but some FIPG/rtv? Or let it ride as is?

I want this baby to be tight! I'm tired of the leaks!!

FIPG, if you already have it. If you don't, Permatex's "The Right Stuff" gasket maker is just as good IME and less expensive.

FIPG by itself or with the paper? I was looking at the right stuff too, but was thinking Ultra black. I'm thinking i should be safe with either.

I have never heard of FIPG but in my opinion you would have a hard time beating The Right Stuff. It is THAT good. By itself with no gasket. Any idea what FIPG stands for? Just curious.

It's one of the other.. Paper gasket OR Sealant. Permatex makes great stuff. Toyota FIPG and Ultra Black are my fav's. I always have at least 1 of each laying around haha.

I have. It works fine. The only advice I would give is to make sure that you get it everywhere it's supposed to go, because I missed one of the fins around the water jacket and ruined a bunch of oil and coolant.
