Fire Red Brake Drums

I don't like red drums, they look tacky. Being in high school you see tons of riced out Civics and Eclipses. Speaking of ricers, I saw a dark red Kia Rio sedan the other day. Apparently this guy had the only Vtec Rio in the world judging by his sticker and was running Goodyears with a Yokohama sticker.

Back on topic- Does anyone know what color the drums were when 4Runners rolled off the factory line? I'm torn between metal colored and black, but I'm personally all for the OEM look.

I'm 99% sure they are black from factory.

I think calipers look good painted, mine are painted red but I think that painting drums red are kind of tacky, I painted mine black.

I personally think drums painted "look at me" colors look terrible, I'd much prefer them black or even silver. I have no problem with them looking clean and cared for, but why draw attention to drums? Does that make me a "blowhard"?:D

Edit: and if you do paint the calipers, definitely do NOT paint the dust shield red as well, that would look ridiculous IMO.

Paint them black or silver ASAP!

If you are going to have red brake drums, you might as well get some of those stick-on, diamond shaped air vents for your fenders as well.

Just paint them back and we will forget all about this.

Showing off drum brakes is the last thing you want to do,it's not impressive from a performance standpoint. It is the "ricer" thing to do.

I vote for black. Looks better than rust and does not draw attention to the fact that you drive a vehicle that is too cheap to have 4 wheel disk.

I think either would look fine, and would be a huge improvement over red.

You can all go to hell...:satan:

I like the way this thread is going now. Much better than a flame war.

The truck is looking good Nelson. I notice the frame is nice and black around the wheel well and figure you got at that with some paint, too. My upper control arms and the rear spring mounts are rusty and hard to reach--did you find any way to treat up in there without lifting the body off? I managed to get most of my rear axle cleaned up.

Thanks, I did hit the frame rails with some POR-15, though it didn't take well and I have some bubbling in some areas. I hit everything I could with POR-15 when I had the whole axle off for my axle swap. I don't think I got any up on the upper side of the shock mounts, but I did hit the bottoms and everything I could see. I just couldn't get into the top of the rails where the body is in the way. I think I shoved the brush in there, but I couldn't get the rust off, so it was just doing what I can. It wasn't really a good job, but I figure it's better than nothing.

imo not digging the red on green, but hey it's what he had at the time, you should go with a matching green or black if you get around to it nelson :thumb3:

i like color matched or classics black and silver, maybe red on a silver car as well, but the red only works with certain colors of cars imo.
