I recently just bought my first 4runner. It is a 98 SR5 automatic V6 with 141k miles on it. Bought it for 4800 and feel like I got a good deal on it. It is real clean looking and seems to drive nice, tight steering and smooth shifting.
A few problems I see with it are extremely gummed up drive shaft yolks and u-joints, lots of oil around the seals of the valve covers, and a some rust on the rear axle.
I want to know what I should be doing first off as far as maintenance goes. Here is what I plan on doing this weekend and in the coming weeks.
1)Drain and change differential fluids
2)Drain and change transfer case fluids
3)New oil and oil filter
4)New drive belts
5)Clean up drive shafts and re-grease them
6)Change transmission fluids in the near future, seems to be alright for now
I also suspect that I will be needing a timing belt as well. The owner before me had it for two years and well over 20,000 miles so I'm thinking I will need to change the timing belt and water pump, something I plan on taking to a shop to have done. Power steering was replaced by a shop at 123k miles.
What other things should I look at doing to it for beginning maintenance?
