First 5k Check-up

It's almost time for my first 5k checkup since i'm somewhere between 4,500 and 4,600 miles. So some time next week or the week after I will be at 5,000. Should I wait until after it hits 5,000 or can I go in now since I am somewhat close? Just trying to figure out my schedule.

Should I have them look for anything in specific other than make sure everything works since it's a new vehicle and change the oil?

You can go in for service whenever it's convenient for you - there's no rule that says you have to wait.

Check your Maintenance Guide to see what needs to be done at 5000 miles. Don't ever ask a dealer for the "5,000 mile service" (or any mileage interval) because they'll do unnecessary things in order to pad the bill. Ask explicitly for whatever things the Maintenance Guide says needs to be done at the time.

Other then chaning the oil, what needs to be done. Uhhh....Nothing. Do you have money to burn?

I think an oil change and a driveshaft lube job is all that should be required.

dont sweat it, its just 5k, and oil change and oil filter change is what it needs.

Just do the basic oil change, lube the joints, air filter (Maybe), clean your battery terminals.

Don't forget to rotate the tires too. Make sure they change your oil filter too. The yutz who did my first 5k forgot to do so, so now I change my own oil and filter.

Change the oil, replace oil filter, rotate the tires, and lube the drive shaft......

Is that all I should ask for?

And the reason I am asking is because I have never owned a new vehicle before and I am used to $1,700 worth of work every time I took in my ford, so I was just seeing what all needed to be done.

Like toto said, I would never tell them to do the "5k check-up" so I wanted to know everything before I went in.

josh, as an aside, I bought myself my own air compressor and grease gun. Sometimes the stealer won't even lube the shafts even if you request it. It pays to do the job yourself sometimes. I feel good and have piece of mind knowing that I do some of the maintenance work myself and I did it right. I get to change the oil, lube the zerks, and even check my tires at my own convenience in my own garage. Small stuff I know, but saves you headaches and money in the long run. Just thought I'd mention it.

For me, I try to follow the maintenance schedule/book that comes with the 4runner. I have to admit though, sometimes when I crawl underneath to pump some grease into the zerks I find that it doesn't need any after every 5k. So to answer your question I guess yes and no.

Yes, that it should be checked at the very least. No, that it isn't always needing a lube after every 5k. There is however the infamous clunk. When that happens I check the shaft regardless of mileage.
