First Gen Opinions - $8500 budget

My honest opinion on these trucks is that so many are high mileage, it just comes down to what's rebuilt. Most people with these trucks are already past all the big repairs by now. If it's all documented on the swap and what not I dont think you'd have problems. Maybe look at bearings, diffs, bushings etc.

Sooo.. I ran a carfax on that 4R in Utah -- the one with 135K miles. It came back as "NOT ACTUAL MILES." See below. Anyone have any idea that that's about? I wasn't sure if that was a common issue with vehicles this old, or should I worry about this?

The mystery starts way back in 1984. According to the title records, back in 1984 the vehicle went from 0 to 17,000 miles in just two months (prorated average of about 100,000 miles/year!), and then from 17,000 to 27,000 miles on the same day! Bottom line is, the Utah DMV doesn't have a clue about mileage on that vehicle, and neither do you.

Usually stuff like this is the result of a failed and replaced odometer, but when that happened is anyone's guess.

haha unfortunately I haven't yet... I'm now just trying to find one in really good condition with low miles. I think I'd like to build something fresh. I wish that one in Utah had a reliable odometer reading. :rant:

If I get that Utah 4R down to $7k, do y'all think it would worth that? It looks clean, and with the mileage/odometer issues starting a few months after the first owner buying it, I wonder if it was a paperwork issue.

Regardless, if the miles were even 280K, it being this clean, do you think $7K is a fair value?
