First Oil Change - When?

Who here actually waits until 5k miles to do the first oil change? I know that is what is recommended by Toyota, but does anyone else feel the need to do it at 1k or even 3k?

Personal decision but I did an oil change at 500 miles, 2500, 5k, and letting the dealer do the 10k.

FYI...the guys will be here any minute to complain that you didn't use the search button...lol

It's ridiculous spoon-feeding threads like this that clog up the forum, so yeah we will complain. :)

Didn't say it wasn't warranted, just knew you were coming..lol

OP, do whatever you think is best for your vehicle, but I'd at least change it at 5k to get any break in metal out. Then you can go 10k between changes if you want. I can swing the ~$35 to do it every 5k so I'm going that route.
 
I changed mine at the dealer, and halfway home, and then the next morning.
10,000 doesn't feel right to me. Those toyota engineers have nothing on my 20 years experience of changing oil in my driveway. The manual is full of lies

I did my first oil change ME @3K miles.. why ? sludge in the oil fill cap ..the last time I would see that white/yellow muck was when I used conventional oils in the 1980's GM sedan ..only used castrol 10-30wt changed oil @3500 miles .. sold vehicle from day one me 380K miles ran great.. but I did see sludge in the fill cap on engine.

so the 2016 T4R as winter temps came on in dec vehicle had only 3K miles so my guess is this is a break in oil toyota put in it in japan .

after changing the oil no sludge under the cap mobil synthetic I put in so all is good 7500 mile oil changes look good to me on the toyota ..perhaps 10K is good also ...reason I say this is the oil on my ride looks great @7500 miles so 10K is looking good for me...

what you have to change early is the rear diff.. I and other found the rear diff gear oil looking very bad .. 3K miles I did the rear diff ..

I second that on the rear diff. Did mine at 2500 miles along with the front and transfercase. Front and TC were pretty clean, rear was already pretty dirty and magnet plug was caked with material. They have Amsoil Severe Gear in them now, should be GTG for a bit.

Toyota recommends 10K miles, not 5K miles which is insane. I did my first at 2K, 2nd at 5K, and I will change every 5K for the time I own it. Mobil 1 0-20 with OEM Toyota filter.

Oh jeez. More nonsense and claims of superiority. Please tell us how much more advanced level education and training you have than the dozens or thousands of engineers at Toyota.

LOL the fact you have faith in engineers is sad. Things are ENGINEERED to fail! Change your oil every 10k, it's your truck, really no one cares. The FACT still remains, changing oil sooner is better for your engine, period.

eh, some of the oil change reports that have been posted had elevated metals at 10k, i think blackstone recommended trying 7,500

since you don't know the failure rate that toyota used for their failure analysis you can't determine that 10k is perfect, if you don't mind the cost 5k is fine.
Edit: they actually recommended 6k miles in this report

i don't do 5k every change, but i have a few times per the service manual for severe duty (lots of idling and dusty conditions in my case)
