First Oil Change - When?

I had seen a bunch of guys reporting metal filings in the filter housing at their first oil change at 10K miles. I am only at 9100 miles so I have only done 2 oil changes so far. As of now, I haven't found a single metal filing laying in the bottom of the oil filter canister cap. Is it because I changed my oil so soon and there wasn't enough time for them to accumulate? Maybe, but that just proves my point. Keep that crap out of the engine, keep things as well lubes as possible, and maybe you will cut down on premature wear. To me the $50 oil change every 5K is very cheap peace of mind. My next oil change will include a magnetic drain pan plug and magnets on the outside of the oil filter housing. The cleaner your oil, less abrasives floating around, the longer your engine will last.

Ooooh, some elevated metals. Oooh, I don't know Toyota's failure analysis details. Good thing I'm not a worry wart.

I've been driving Toyotas off and on since the mid-80s and the manual hasn't let me down yet. And the cars haven't either. Not once, if you don't count the faulty hood switch on my '10 Highlander Limited that kept setting off the security alarm at all hours. It was a warranty fix.

Of course, I don't keep vehicles for 1,000,000 miles and don't want to. It's enough if they go 300,000 (counting my mileage and the people who drive them after I'm done.)

Throw your money away if you want to.

Are you here just to argue? You're the only one that disagrees with changing oil sooner, that means you're wrong! Who am I to argue with someone who argues against fact......... Guess you know more than companies conduction oil analysis day in and day out..........

LOL the fact you have faith in engineers is sad. Things are ENGINEERED to fail! Change your oil every 10k, it's your truck, really no one cares. The FACT still remains, changing oil sooner is better for your engine, period.

i think there's a significant tin-foil hat element to your post here... i mean, second-guessing the manufacturer's recommended interval and suggesting that it's recommended due to planned obsolescence?! :tinfoil3:

that aside, the fact is that on a well-maintained motor you're not really doing anything "better" by changing the oil before its additive package has been adequately exhausted. (you might make yourself feel better, but that's another issue entirely.)

this is why oil analyses include the option for a TBN reading... What is a TBN, and who uses it?

Not for those of us that care about the life of our engines......... You literally can't change your oil too often, there is no such thing as oil that's too clean.

Actually that's completely false with modern detergent oils.

Oh right, you spent a ton of money on an extremely complicated machine from a company renowned for the durability of their product. Good thing none of those stupid, good-for-nothing engineers were involved

Toyota recommends 10K miles, not 5K miles which is insane. I did my first at 2K, 2nd at 5K, and I will change every 5K for the time I own it. Mobil 1 0-20 with OEM Toyota filter.

I don't drive much and the vehicle rarely gets above 3000 rpm for petes sake so I pretty much do 5K ( kilometres ) changes as well. I should be at 10k end of April so that will be my 2nd since July.

Plus - who doesn't like having a beer and relaxing under the truck for a couple hrs even though it pretty much only takes an hour tops.:wtf:

You guys obviously get cheap pricing down in the US, two jugs of 0W20 Mobil 1 and the OEM filter set me back $100 ( Canuck bucks that is )

In the future someone may actually look in the correct place and somehow find this useful.
