First time painting bumper.

So, I've filly gotten sick of my rock and bug scarred bumper from the many, many drives my runner has had from coast to coast. I plan on attempting to match it with the body. I have some millenium silver (1CO) aerosol paint, primer, and hi-gloss clear coat.

My first question is about sanding. I've sanded it down where I can't feel any of the chips (with 220 grit) and it's smooth running my hand cross it. Do I need to take it all the way down to bare metal to prime it, or can I prime with the remaining paint and primer still on?

Here's some pictures of the current status of the job. I knew my years of sanding brass at The Citadel would eventually aid me in life... until I got lazy and found my electric sander lol. I hope you like my Air Force themed cover. Thank you nellis housing for the free news paper.

If it was me I would take that all the way off the bumper and paint it off the 4runner. Just my .02

by no means a painter of any time other than rattle cans, but I would not want to risk getting overspray or small particles on the rest of the body. Not that it would matter on my crappy paint anyways.

I'd say take it off, too. Not very difficult at all, and you'll know you got complete coverage.

Also, to answer your question... As long as the paint is scuffed, you can prime over the paint. I'd suggest laying a heavy primer coat and sanding again to further reduce the pits from the chips.

Thanks. I'll post pictures when I'm done. If the millenium silver doesn't work out my backup is painting the fender flared and bumpers a glossy black. I don't have a built up off road rig and matte black just looks cheap to me on stock. I just picture the super base black plastic manufacturers put on cars nowadays.

So I put a thick base coat of primer. I've finished with the 3rd coat of the millenium silver and I'm pretty damn pleased. It's not paint booth perfect, but I'm liking it not looking like I hit a silver leopard. The clear coat should give it the shine on the rest of the body. These pics are pre-clear coat. The color matches perfectly.

She's done, and I'm very pleased with how it turns out. If you get very close you can notice some small deformities from the rocks and chips on the bunper, but it doesn't bother me. You don't notice it from a normal distance and it's a huge improvement. This was my test before I went all in and did the rest of the bumper and fenders. I'll be painting them too after I see how this looks in a few days. I have some small dents and clear coat peeling on my hood so I may try to score a sport hood at the pick a part and paint it. My bumper doesn't sit flush with the body so I'm going to go hunt for one there too.

Will any 3rd gen rear bumper fit the 02 4runners?

What paint are you using?

Didn't use a whole can of any of this for that part of the bumper. Going to finish it off on the hubcaps then get more for the fenders.

Looks good. I did this exact thing about 6 months ago. I already have taken a few hits. If I could do it again, I would have applied a few more coats of clear. I did 3 light coats. A few more would have protected it little better.

With that, you get full coverage and the edges won't have a higher chance of not coming out as clean or early chipping.

I was worried about snapping the rusty bumper bolts so I opted to keep it on. I lost the tools to pull out snapped bolts a few moves ago and had plenty of paper lol. I slid the tape under the rubber trimmings so it was able to get around the edges. Then I ran a razor blade along the edge of the tape to keep the possibility of it chipping paint down.

Also, I took some shots in the sunlight today. When you get close enough you can tell it's a slightly different shade, which I assume is mostly due to the 15 years of wear on the original paint. If you stand at a noral distance it's not very obvious. I plan on painting the trim and rear bumper too, so even if someone notices the two tone will look intentional. You can probably tell from the closeup that I should have sanded the primer better, but I was worried about paint adhesion. In hindsight a finer grit would've given more surface area for the paint to grab. For $7 a can it's a good deal.
