Fishing and Camping Near San Diego?

I am stuck in San Diego until the end of June. I am down here doing Navy stuff but I expect to have weekends off. I didn't drive the good 4Runner. I drove our 2002 DD but put better tires on it. Yesterday I got a fishing license and brought fishing gear. I've been researching fishing spots and have tried Lower Otay Lake and Dixon Lake. Both have lots of big bass but I can't make a fire unless you have charcoal. I'd rather use wood to build a fire and cook my fish I catch. I will also be camping in the back of the 4Runner.

I figured I'd ask you guys. I know a lot of you are in the Southern CA area.

I didn't really expect too much of answer. Fishermen aren't known for giving up there fishing spots or what they are using for tackle. I half expected someone to say something about fishing in the ditch on the side of I-5 using powerbait for bass. Thanks for the bump though.

You eat bass? Might be a stretch, and you may get flamed for not releasing the fish you catch, but try AZBZ.com. They're a pretty good bunch, maybe they'll know of a lake or two.

Ive had good luck at Lake Wohlford. Try Hodges too.

Temecula Area

Hey man,

I see the issue at hand. If you drive an hour up to the Temecula area there is pretty good camping and fishing for day use. Look up Diamond Valley Lake, and also Lake Skinner. Skinner you can walk around and fish off the banks. Now DV Lake in hemet you have to have a boat pretty much. The Striper Fishing is pretty darn good all the time and they are BIG 20lbs caught often by the spill way.

Hit me up and I can point you in other directions too.

There is a brand new thread on AZBZ.com (which was and still is real) titled San Diego River under the Fishing Chat section. According to one of the posters, he fishes between the 163 and the Santee. He also mentioned the Mission Gorge area. Dunno where that is in SD, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Stripper fishing sounds good too, may have to check that out this summer when I visit....

Years ago someone told me "check out azbz" so I typed it in and that's what came up. It's what everyone I know calls, and it's what I call it. Figured it was a generic label.....

Great website tho. I wasn't a bass fisherman when 1st found it, learned a bunch of good stuff there.

Dude, your in San Diego, go south. Baja. San felipe on the gulf side, head to Ensanada on the pacific side and get on a deep sea boat. Shore fishing at Erindia { 2 hours south of Ensanada ] Good Camping all over Baja. Ensanada is about 1 hour 40 minutes from San diego. San Felipe is about 4 and a half hour drive from San diego. Baja kicks ass, lots of good trails every where.
