I like the 5th gen a lot! It only has 73,000 miles on it currently. It is my wife's daily and our road trip/camping/raft towing vehicle. It's reminds me of the 3rd gen, just newer - not the fastest, or the fanciest, or the best on gas mileage. But it can do everything pretty well and has solid capability in stock form with some better tires on it.

3rd gen looks good, as does the new 5th gen. I really like that red color on those. The trail edition makes such a difference on those early 5th gens before the facelift.

Thanks! Agreed on the 5th gen, the pre-facelift trails are my favorite.

Some more updates on the 3rd gen's status (good and bad) coming soon...

Way back in October I bought some new tires during the Discount Tire Direct eBay sale - 315/75/16 Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003.

Time to start cutting and hammering. Thanks [MENTION=82211]TCMach[/MENTION] and [MENTION=121903]Black798[/MENTION] for answering my questions. Also used many threads on this forum (especially [MENTION=67615]Dirtco[/MENTION]) to get an idea of what I was in for, as well as the write-up by [MENTION=77310]BrandonF[/MENTION] on his Coastal Offroad website - https://www.coastaloffroad.com/blog/clearing-35-tires-at-any-ride-height.

Welded in 1/4" round rod all around the opening to give myself something more solid to weld the patch plate to.

Patched the holes with 16 gauge sheet metal

Used blue rtv to seal the seams, and sprayed with primer and rubberized undercoating.

Nice work Chris!! Well done. It's good you bought them when you did. I think DTD ebay might have stopped doing their bi-annual sale back in October. I have not seen one for March, and we are at the end of the month. Glad I jumped on new shoes back in Oct.

I'll be interested to hear how you like those Yokohamas. The rig looks great!

Very clean tub and those new Yoko's look deadly! I like how you kept the rocker panel area and footwell area kind of separated in your cuts. So is the bottom of your A-pillar (or the extension of the A-pillar) where it runs down and meets the floor - still intact? (I hope that makes sense?)

Thanks Ryder. It took me a while but I'm happy with the outcome so far.

Bummer they may not be doing that sale anymore, it was an easy way to save some money!

Thanks Addison. The tires have been great so far.

I need some clarification on the a-pillar question. I want to say yes, it is still in tact in the sense that it's just trimmed back. But I'm not sure that's what you are asking.

Man I felt so confident after getting through the lower section where we saw other people have trouble. I gave it some gas to climb up that last v-notch section and felt the tire lift, let off the gas thinking it would come down or balance out, and it was already going over. I had my seat belt on, just braced myself on the steering wheel and waited for it to hit. It crunched pretty good (mirror took most of the impact) and slid just a little bit. I got the engine shut off pretty quickly and waited for the boys to get down to me and figure out what to do haha. I am really happy it didn't end up going further down the gate, could have been a bad day! My wife was watching and it freaked her out pretty good, I'm glad she wasn't in the truck with me and the dog was with her.

As far as flopping it goes, it turned out pretty well. The driver side front door needs replaced for sure, the driver side rear door has some minor damage but I'm not sure I'll replace it. There is pretty minimal damage on the actual body and the windows all made it. The side mirror took most of the impact, both bumpers and the sliders hit the rock too which may have helped save the body. But no one was hurt, we got it tipped back over and I drove it home the next day so it's all good!

Here is a photo from [MENTION=107971]derpiful[/MENTION] right when the tire started to lift, the driver front tire didn't climb when I gave it gas, and it seems like the truck just pivoted on it and went over haha.

Ive watched the video of me doing it last year and Alex's video of you this year probably 100 times now and I still cant figure out what caused it to go so fast. The only thing I can think of is I was left foot braking the shit out of mine when it started lifting so it didn't get the same pop up. I felt kinda guilty too since I had just about said Id spot lol.

Glad everything turned out how it did though with no injuries. I know for damn sure there is no way I would of been as calm during the whole thing

Yeah man. Glad everyone was okay, and glad that the damage was limited mostly to side view, and doors. That could have been way worse. Good for you keeping it cool and in control. Otherwise, how did you like your new tires?

It definitely went over quick! The left foot braking probably helped you. And no one should feel guilty, when you drop into that obstacle you gotta own whatever happens on the way up. And I was confident in the line.

Tires were awesome! Not too noisy, good on the road and I liked how they handled the trails. I had them aired down around 12 psi.

For real though I would have thought plenty of 4runner owners were also into fishing, but haven't run into any on the forum yet (at least no one vocal about it).

There's a few fish photos floating around in the middle of this thread somewhere. I definitely fish more than I wheel haha. But anymore the 3rd gen stays home for those trips...

Moab

Another excellent Moab trip with the homies [MENTION=94888]EatonKyleH[/MENTION] [MENTION=88391]NateMob[/MENTION] [MENTION=122219]Twenman4[/MENTION] [MENTION=107971]derpiful[/MENTION] [MENTION=129084]Flemster[/MENTION] and my buddy with a TJ. Also met up with [MENTION=121903]Black798[/MENTION] and some of his buddies for a day. Hayden broke his motor mount and it fell out. Found it jammed inside the frame rail on top of where the CV meets the diff. Alex broke his motor mount. My brother blew a hole in the sidewall of his tire. Flopped on Hell's Gate. :cheers:
