fixed little rust ( pics )

Today had little extra time so I took care of little rust spots on the frame. It's nothing to worry about, it's not even bad at all and I'm probably anal. But the car is in nj and for Nj the frame.is CLEAN!! My girls dads 05 ford is a rust bucket falling apart. Anyways, so I bought some stuff from harbour freight, a grinder for 15$ some tools, brake cleaner, and VHT chassy paint.









That rusty part is the hitch !













***can anyone tell me what is that metal.sticking out of the rear part of the frame ? It's the same thing on the other side of the frame.also. it's like a leaf spring. It's rusted !!! But I don't know what it does. That part next to it the frame part is in good condition. ***

Way to be proactive on the rust.

The stick has a few nuts welded to it, the nuts that the bolts of your hitch screw into.

And just a note, a lot of people like to do a base coat of a rust reformer first. I think Permatex makes a popular one. The idea is that it should stop all of the rust that sits in the tiny perforations that wirewheels can't get into. On the flipside, the can says that if its sprayed on rust-free metal, it may actually create rust. So in your case, I think you did it right given that there wasn't an awful lot of rust to begin with.

Looks good. NJ isn't the worst when it comes to Northeast rust but it can still eat away a vehicle over a very long period of time. I never had luck with rust reformer. It always bubbled back up after about two years. I find it best to use naval jelly to dissolve as much rust after I send and then follow it with paint.

I figured I'd take care of the rust before it gets worst. I really tried to grind all the rust of, well as much as I could. Then I cleaned all those areas with brake cleaner and towel.

I though about bed liner, rustolium rust reformer but I think and mostly most people say that grinding the rust out and good paint does the job. I'll just hace to keep an eye on see how it holds up.


I might just clean the whole frame of as best as I can and spray it with black paint. Not grind the paint just re fresh it.

I used VHT chassy paint by the way. And it's heat resistant

have you seen my post about this rust prevention? if not check my build thread and links up top on the 1st page.

i had painted my frame once again and touched up since that post, sand and rocks slowly chip away the paint, hence the touch ups.

No I haven't, but I do understand that it will need touch ups. It won't last forever, and even bed liner like por15 products like that chip. So it's basic maintance. But I will check your thread out. Thanks

We basically did it the same way , except I didn't use the rust reformer. Wire wheeled it to bare metal as good as good as it gets and painted.
