Very interesting article. It is a very cool looking vehicle, especially in that color. Here are a few pictures I took of it at the 2003 NY International Auto Show:

I especially like the two winches and the ability have a true flat cargo area to sleep two people side by side. Functionality is what I have always liked.

See, I completely disagree. Besides the fact that its completely unlike any Hummer/Escalade car that I hate, with their high cost and low truck value, it encorporates offroading into a cheap functional car. I'm sold... despite having to make the money/see it. :D

Edit: Furthermore, I don't think it is meant to be a classy stylish vehicle, I think its going back to FJ 60 roots, similar to the 4Runners roots... Its meant to be the rugged offroad functional over stylish "my girlfriends gonna hate it manual transmission truck" thats a truck, not another mall carrier/enlarged and motorized grocery cart. And as I reread this I feel it might sound as if I'm saying this towards you or the new 4runner, and I'm not. Just a friend of mine said it sounded a little harsh, its meant just in general.

Guys, this thing is sweet.. it's just like VW reinventing the Bug... Toyota wanted to go way back, further than the FJ-60 or FJ-62 model, to the FJ-40 model... hence the classic white top that they are emphamis for... i still have my 1971 FJ-40... and it is a dream to drive.. it's a monster actually, my 4runner is a dream to drive...

i am curious to see how many movie stars buy it not even knowing the original roots of the truck.. they just think it looks cool... i'd buy one of these over a H2 anyday....

V8 powered, 4 wheel disc brakes, electric lockers front and rear... are ya kidding me... look out range rover.... !
 
To all his/her own. I don't take offense as this is a forum where everyone has a right to an opinion. My opinion is that it looks like a lego toy, plastic. it doesn't look as rugged/strong as the old FJ's. Maybe it just comes down to either you like it or you don't. Just like with the G-wagons, which i like. :) Too bad not everyone's rich like Thai. :D
 
I have been wondering if this was ever going to come to fruition. I really love this FJ Cruiser and had been hoping it would be a reality, but I don't think it will encourage me to give up my 4Runner. After having a Honda Element I have to say there is something to be said for the "creature comforts"! Yes, I know it is different from the Element in that it is a true off-road vehicle. I just enjoy having things like carpet in my vehicles!:)
 
There is ugly and then comes fuggly and that "thing" surpasses both and goes beyond the ability of mere words to express how sad it is. I wouldn't have it if they were giving it away and am shocked that Toyota would put their name on it. They should market it under the Scion brand as it fits with the gross looks of that line much better. If this is the direction Toyota is heading I guess this will be my last....
 
Concept car interiors are always like that. The real thing should be significantly different. Look at the prototype for the next Tundra. Another ugly sucker. The real thing should look a lot better.

My concern, however, is that they might remove all the options that I would find useful. I'd like a really good stock new 4x4 with a LOT of offroad capability. And I don't like any of the offerings currently on the market.
 
Lets see the true specs and what it looks like when it will be sold in production. The concept was still based on the old Taco platform, so I think a large number of changes will be made.

After two years of study, Toyota will bring the FJ Cruiser to America this year. The production version of the rugged two-door SUV will be unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show, a Toyota source said. The source said it will look "very close" to the concept FJ Cruiser that debuted at the 2003 Detroit auto show. It also will carry significant cues of the original circa-1960 FJ-40 Land Cruiser, down to the identical logo. It will be imported from Japan and go on sale this fall.

The Chicago Auto Show will start on Feb. 9. I'm very interested to see what they came up with. Any members in the Chicago area that can go look and take a digital camera???

I don't think it would look or be like the old FJ40 if it had 4 doors.

But what I wish for is that it be convertable like the original.

This is going to put me in a spot. The 4runner I have now is the truck I always wanted. But that is only because they never made anything comparable to the FJ until now. In a way I hope it has some drawbacks so I won't be jealous and lustful for one of these and I can go on happily owning my 4runner.

If it is as good as the 4runner in the things that matter to me I think I will be trading the 4runner for the new FJ. (really hoping it is convertable)
