Flatboys rear turbo build

this may just be my 2AM thinking here but what if the intake were routed into the frame rail somehow? reinforce the opening appropriately, no idea how filtration would work but its certainly shielded from water/snow/mud/dirt/dead animals... well im going to bed

2am thinking is usually better left in your head ;-)
 
I may be tempted to buy the connector pipe if you make a second! =)

It's a tough spot for the filter. Maybe up behind the rear quater panel? The one side has the inside air vent, but maybe the other side?

Or, if you don't run a spare tire place it high up in there and have a baffle to stop water and dirt intake. Water penetrates a 4" slanted opening at about 700 fpm. Behind the rear bumper? etc.

In either event dust and rain are the biggest issues. Also to remember when offroading it's under there!

Still a much easier solution if you aren't a hardcore offroader and don't mind working out the air filter problem.
 
I would DEFINITELY recommend putting a shield around both the intake and the turbo. Or like some have said, relocate the intake completely so it is not in the under-car area; that would be the best IMO.

The automotive OEM's build shields around sensors and other electronics when they can't get that sensor to meet the abrasion and exposure requirements of the under-car area. The specs are very different if you have a shield around it, and the shield makes a BIG difference in corrosion and exposure. My company is an OES for sensors in this situation, so we have experience with that exact scenario, and have done the actual testing. Shields make a big difference.

Just don't make it so close to the components that junk can get trapped between the turbo and the shield. That will accelerate corrosion.
 
Thanks for the suggestion guys, for now I'll just leave it and closely monitor the turbo and intake pipe. This princess is highway only and winter for the most part.

I'm hoping this weekend I can get a bit done on this project, we're still kart racing and its eating up a lot of spare time but here is a couple more pics

Dont care what anyone says a rear mounted turbo is not as efficient as a turbo mounted right off the exhaust manifold. They are a lot more laggy, they have too much piping which causes more places for boost leaks, they can suck in water, offroading can tear it off, there are lots of reasons they are not as good. Harder to run oil lines which can also leak.

That couldn't be any more incorrect. A properly sized turbo will spool almost instantly. An incorrectly sized turbo could have spooling issues right off a manifold, too. I personally know some HUGE hp cars that run rear mounts, and have been in the performance game for a long time. You're just plain wrong.

not to thread jack but i wonder why centrifugal blowers never caught on for 4runners? in my mustang days they were huge, and sound awesome! maybe the mounting poses to many issues

edit* just googled and they are better performers at the top end of the RPM range, so that makes sense. carry on, I want to hear turbo sounds!!!!!!

Im comparing the same turbo mounted on teh front to the rear, not different sized turbos. Also almost all real high rear mounted turbos are on v8 cars and thats why turbo is instant. I know people running them on ls1 cameros and they do lag on the rear, its the major factor when trying to build a rear turbo setup. You have to worry about the turbo size more.

I have ran super large non ball bearing turbos on 2.0L 4 bangers so I know about lag. The whole argument is that it is more effecient off the manifold. Again this is still a good setup for what is used for.
 
Tiffany hasn't gotten too much attention lately, so I bought her a new hood,


hood was 260$, but the **#$)!!!!&#$ insert is 414$. Oops should have done more homework.

1/4" stainless Teflon oil feed line 11'-6" long. (0.080" restrictor at turbo)

If the stainless line rubs anything you care about it'll be sawed in half, I put a hunk of hose around it and tye wrap it good.




base for the scavenging pump, I red loctited the rubber isolation dampeners on so they wont back out.


the in side of the pump came with a filter screen adapter thingy
 


I would have liked the lines in and out of the pump at the bottom, but then I'd have to run some 180 deg fittings to make it work, we'll see if it has a pumping problem.




the return line has a good 1" clearance to the exhaust pipe and its wrapped with a high temp loom.
 
Was going finish up my oil filter relocation kit but went to start her and she's dead as a door knob. Not sure why, I haven't touched any electricity yet
