flying saucer noise when 4Runner's moving

my 4runner sounds the same,

well (excuse my english) I have a 4runner that makes a sound when accelerate and decrease power (it sound like the cars that had a bad am radio and speakers conected like interference on speakers,) but it sounds in the engine some friends told me it was normal other said it was air intake respiration of the engineit has nothin to do with the wheels or rear dif. the sounds is in front .btw and I understand what you said about the spaceship sound I really doubt this is a major problem, even without knowing that every truck its different. toyota if to last more than 300k miles, dont get scare, so do I cause if its your rear sif the problem then if the sound is the same as mine we have the same problem.. but tell me the sound is anoying? strong? cause mine isnt that bad!!! please if you solved the prob;lem let us know,,, good luck friend

Has anyone drained and refilled the suspect differential? I'd do so, drain into a clean container with a strong magnet in it. Swish it around, let the magnet pick up any metal particles, have a look at it. There will normally be some metal particles, should be very fine and not much of it. A guy who works on differentials should be able to tell if there's an unusual amount or size of particles.

Another possible check would be to drop the rear driveshaft, lock the center differential, and go for a drive in front-wheel-drive. The rear driveshaft would be under no load, and shouldn't change when accelerating or decelerating. You will get a lot of torque steer, the steering wheel will pull hard as you accelerate.

If it's engine related, pulleys or belts, you'll notice the sound when slowly increasing RPM while stopped. Probably not the problem.

If it's a wheel bearing, you should notice it change when going around a curve, as you load up the wheel bearings on one side and unload the others.

And finally, I'm not a fan of dealerships Mechanics often go from dealership to working as an independent. Ask around, find a mechanic lots of people trust, preferably one who used to be a Toyota dealership mechanic. Most mechanics can rebuild a rear end, it's not that special. I have to agree, a specialist is more likely to think it's a problem in their specialty.

power steering its a posible reason of that sound

today a guy with a 4 runner check mine and told me the pwer steer has problems and , maybe is that truth cause theres a lot of fluid on power s. and he accelerate my truck and told me that humming sound in engine accel and decrease waqs power steer.. what do you think?

A failing power steering pump will make a whining noise. Some guys have added a little Downey fabric softener to their PS fluid to quiet it on other vehicles. That won't fix it, and I don't think I'd try it myself. Make sure your power steering fluid reservoir is full, and make plans to have the pump replaced.

I just went out and looked at the PS pump on my V6, looks very easy to get to and replace.

I just went out and looked at the PS pump on my V6, looks very easy to get to and replace.

its too risky to put some softener in the power bomb, but maybe it works( not fix) but maybe tomorrow I will change it to see if the sound go away or thats the way that a 4 runner sounds... do you remember the grand marquis power steering from the late 80,s early 90,s?? somethin like is that sound

Lol, I can't narrow it down to a car, but yeah, some cars seemed to have loud power steering pumps almost from the factory.

Power steering is easy to diagnose. If sound increases when you go to dead stop of your steering (when pump works the hardest) it will be most likely the pump. If sound does not change-it is not steering pump for sure.

yeah dry and wasted band produce that sound.... but well fliyng saucers are out there I change 2 and sound better theres another needing to be change


update post theres no sound anymore now the belt was change and now is mose silent and runs better I think.... anybody can tell if it (a belt ) makes your mileage be better , if the gas last more?

saucer whining rear end noise fixed

i am the originator of the thread. just posting back for your info the issue was fixed, by replacing some bearings in rear differential. You can read more about the fix at:

Sounds like what I was experienceing. The noise on my truck was from Frozen calipers! I had the calipers/rotors replaced at the dealer and the noise is gone.

To test for frozen calipers, you'll have to put the truck on lift , with tranny in netural try to spin the tires. They should spin freely but if not its the frozen calipers.

If thats the problem, you should replace both calipers/rotor/pads and bleed the system.

I concur - It was very difficult to turn my front left tire when jacked up and constantly made a high pitched rubbing noise. I replaced the calipers (and rotors too - only $31.00 / rotor at NAPA vs. ~$20.00 / rotor to turn them) and noticed a huge difference. I was also getting a substantial amount of brake squeal with relatively new pads / plenty of anti-squeal applied.

2. pinion seal replaced, 4 months ago
3. whining noise on acceleration / giving gas between 30mph to 70mph, started maybe 3 months ago
