So yesterday im headed home after working all day and the 4runner just dies on me...no skipping or popping just straight up shutdown. I pull off to the side of the road and attempt to start it up...it runs for maybe a second and is spitting and sputtering and promptly dies. After several tries I call the wife to come get me because all my tools are at work 60 miles away.
Today when i get off work i grab all my tools and a new fuel filter and an ignition coil (just in case). Get to the 4runner and try to start it and it runs crappy for about 4 seconds and dies. I spray the air box with starting fluid and it runs like it should...stop the flow of starting fluid and it dies. So i crawl under the truck and replace the fuel filter and my brother turns the engine over with the filter off and we get gas flow...well a trickle gas flow. Im only left to assume that my fuel pump is crapping out and cannot make the pressure it needs to run right. Has anyone EVER ran into this? sorry this post is so long but im really frustrated and ready to get this thing in working order.

You're not getting enough fuel so I'd say you're probably right about the fuel pump... either that or it's plugged up somewhere. Maybe at the pickup?

I've dropped the gas tank on mine before and it wasn't too difficult.

yeah im going to drop the tank tommorow...alldata tells me that toyota does not give instructions on dropping the tank, just an exploded parts view...how gay is that

I know the 1st gen you could access the pump through an access panel under the back seats, without dropping the tank. I don't see them changing that on the 2nd gen...

That's an unfortunate way of putting it.

Sorry couldn't resist. Take care when messing with the fuel tank (BOOM) & good luck figuring it out.

Fuel pump is much easier than anticipated..... pull the carpet back under the rightside back seat, take the 3 screws that hold a small plate and from thre you can disconnect the fuel pump and take the feed line off. get under the tank remove the 5 12mm bolts that hold the tank ccover on, then remove the 6 12mm bolts that hold the tank to the frame and remove the filler hose and the tank will come down with some ease. Take the driveshaft out and the tank will just fall down.
